The San Mateo Army National Guard is one of the largest and most diverse military forces in the country. The unit has beenDeployed to many different countries throughout its history, from World War II-era coastal defense to deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of theunit's most recent deployments was to Kuwait in 2003. During that deployment, the San Mateo Guard was one of only a few units in California deployed for Operation Desert Storm. In 2013, the unit Deployed two battalions to help support Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIS in Syria. After arriving in Syria, the battalion helped lead an assault on Raqqa which ended with the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi. The battalion also played a critical role during Euphrates Shield operations which stopped ISIL advances near Hasaka city. In 2016, another battalion deployed to Kuwait where they were part of Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve campaign against ISIS known as “Sunnybrook”. The battalion helped lead airstrikes and provided security for coalition convoys delivering supplies and reinforcements into Iraqi Kurdistan Region during Operation Olive Branch. The unit also took part in Exercise Saber Guardian 2016 which focused on air defense exercises between United States Air Force fighter jets stationed at Incirlik Air Base and Turkish Air Forces bomber aircraft operating over Syria airspace
