In 1846, three brothers - John Ricker, George Ricker, and Daniel Dixon - foundedRicker & Dixon Land Company on behalf of themselves and other investors including their uncle Robert Hinchcliffe and father-in-law Jonathan Drake. The firm built several sawmills around Point Reyes Station before selling its interest in 1853 to J.P. Morgan for $10 million dollars (equivalent to $200 million at present). At this point began what would become one of Northern California's most dramatic transformation stories: because of advances in transportation, agriculture, carting off huge amounts of wood for firewood became less necessary and farmers shifted their attention to growing crops instead. By 1850s many small towns had disappeared into suburbs while Point Reyes Station continued to serve as a popular tourist destination primarily due to its views over the bay. What did remain were some large villages such as Sausalito which grew rapidly thanks to Navigation Company employees moving ashore during World War II to help build Naval Base Treasure Beach south of town
