In 1931, the State of California passed a law that authorized the creation of a state coast guard. The first Coast Guard station was established at Monterey Point in San Mateo County. The first lieutenant was appointed and the organization began patrols along California's coastline. In 1941, the Coast Guard purchased two ships, SM 158 and SM 159, to provide coastal patrol service. In 1957, the first boat-launching capability was added to the Coast Guard fleet when SM 227 became operational. The current coast guard fleet features six boats with a complement of thirty-six personnel. The mission of the Coast Guard is to protect life and property on our state's coasts and waterside communities by providing maritime security, issuing citations for traffic violations and enforcing laws that prohibit ocean pollution. On July 14th, 1969, Governor Ronald Reagan signed into law Senate Bill 1027 which provided for an expansion of the state coast guard by purchasing three more vessels - USCGC(L)(9) (1948), USCGC(L)(10) (1984), and USCGC(L)(11) (1991). These three new vessels were designated as CGWS(L)-1 through CGWS(L)-6 respectively; however they remain in use as auxiliary vessels to support missions onshore including search and rescue operations as well as patrolling off shore areas such as Seal Beach Harbor near Los Angeles County beaches

However, recent years have seen a decline in manufacturing activity as large new companies have moved into nearby cities such as Mountain View and Santa Clara. Today, many of the city's largest employers are based elsewhere in Northern California or across the US altogether
The Coast Guard has been providing a service to the American people for over 100 years. The Coast Guard is made up of both civilian and military personnel. The civilian members are known as the National Guard and serve under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security. The military members are known as the Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guardsmen. The Coast Guard traces its origins to 1819 when Congress created the United States Life-Saving Service with a mission to prevent marine disasters and protect coastal communities from piracy and other concerns. In 1942, the Coast Guard was renamed “the United States Naval Service” after World War II ended. The first organized coast guard unit was activated on December 20th,1896 during prohibition days in Boston Harbor. At that time, there were only five men assigned to patrol duty in Boston harbor alone! Today, even though it employs over 21,000 people throughout America’s coastline (including 2200 guardsmen in Puerto Rico), the Coast Guard can lay claim to being one of America’s oldest emergency services! As part of its proactive safety efforts across our Nation’s waters, including offshore protection against drug trafficking and piracy; search & rescue; wildland firefighting; maritime security; hazardous materials response; disaster preparedness; public health emergencies – uniformed or non-uniformed officers work together every day rescuing people who have gone astray or getting them out of harm’s way when something dangerous happens along our coastside….
