The history of San Mateo, California can be traced back to 1795 when the area was part of Spanish Rancho Monterey. The first European to visit this area was Gaspar de Portolá, who named it San Francisco de Asís after his patron saint, Francis Xavier. In 1821, Englishman John Cranch discovered gold in the foothills and made a fortune from trading with Native Americans. In 1825, San Francisco became a city and in 1851, the state of California became a U.S. territory. In 1857, the town of Redwood City was founded on the north side of San Francisco Bay by James Halleckball and George Waring. There are several reports that say Halleckball ran out of money while trying to build a town on Nob Hill and then sunk his money into redwood trees instead. Eventually, both towns merged into one and were renamed Redwood City-San Mateo County in 1906 due to political reasons (Halleckball had been appointed supervisor for Alameda County). Redwood City experienced rapid growth during World War II as many shipyards were built there to produce munitions for America’s war effort. The population reached 100,000 by 1945 but peaked at 150,000 in 1950; however it declined rapidly thereafter due to population loss throughout Northern California following the war and later suburbanization within Redwood City-San Mateo County itself. The last major resident population increase came around 1990 when more people moved to Silicon Valley because of its economic opportunities. However, recent waves of immigration have again reversed this trend: today most residents are descended from immigrants from Asia or Latin America who arrived over generations ago.) Today many downtown businesses closed during the recession while new development thrives on nearby streets such as Ghirardelli Square which contains two large shopping malls as well as numerous restaurants and bars dating back centuries including Peking Opera House which opened its doors in 1886!

However, with better transportation options available during World War II, San Mateo began to prosper as an agricultural center with significant production of crops such as grapes, almonds and apples.
