The first coffee beans were grown in the area now known as San Mateo, California in 1846. The first coffee house in town was the Star of the West, which served coffee until 1861. In 1892, a group of investors bought the Star of the West and started an enlarged business called The Coffee House. They sold their business to The Pacific Coffee Company in 1912. In 1951, Pacific Coffee merged with United Coffee Industries to form Pacific National Corporation. In 1957, United Coffee Industries was sold to Nacoal Enterprises. Nacoal Enterprises merged with Peet's Incorporated in 1978 and became Peet's Corp., one of America's leading coffee companies.
San Mateo is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 56,274 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the north side of San Francisco Bay and About 8 miles east of downtown San Francisco. It borders Marin County to the south and east, Alameda County to the north and west, and Contra Costa County to the southwest. The first European settlers in what would become San Mateo were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1776. They founded a missions system over which they had complete control and under which they paid tribute to Spain. By 1821 there were twenty-one mission churches and basilicas in operation in what is now San Mateo County. In 1846, Missionaries George Hearst (1814-1892) and Don José de la Boda (1789-1866), Jr., purchased about two-thirds of land comprising modern day San Mateo from Juan Crespí for $10 per acre ($ today). After years of struggles with local Native Americans including the Ohlone people, through various treaties these men acquired title to most of inland Santa Clara Valley from them by 1852. In 1865 an act of Congress called for a new county to be formed out of portions of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin counties as part of efforts to centralize government control over county lines while preventing further fragmentation on account of religious affiliation among citizens on both sides of the county line – one half Catholic Missions/orphans run by Spanish priests or their converts who shared only limited worship activity with residents on the other side; half Anglo Protestant Mission families either ran independently or paid fealty only to their respective church congregations within that parish’s boundaries… In 1875–6 due largely to pressure from Democratic Party leaders James Gorman (b. 1850) and Hiram Johnson (1847-1915), supervisors adopted resolutions pledging support for statehood for California but no action was taken until 1886 when Speaker John Phelan moved that resolution up for a vote at his next session as part of an effort led by Governor Edmund Sanger (baptized December 12th 1860 – died November 21st 1946)to gain floor debate on whether or not annexation should be made official at this time… On February 14th 1888 lawmakers voted 15–8 against annexing southern Santa Clara Valley into Oakland because it would have put too much emphasis on agriculture over industry despite efforts by Supervisor Wm Hilty (D–Oakland), then Chairman John D’Emilio (D–San Jose)and others within their parties during heated debate inside City Hall before large crowds outside duringgalleries filling up with gas fumes created conditions reminiscentof American political rallies during that era… Annexation did not take place until March 2nd 1889 when Govt appointed commissioners Orville Cushing Fillmore & Elihu Root took office following passage by Assembly Resolution 611 entitled “Annexation Proposal No 1” which recommended an enlarged Oakland providing: “a proper harborage area capable thereof; convenient streets connecting its several parts; easy access theretofrom all parts OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA … [and] manufactures……………………………………….. [the] town will become self sufficient” On May 24th 1889 Supervisor Hilty again brought up annexation issue after finding out that City Council members had been privately engaged in talks towards forming a trade association with representatives from neighboring cities without informing him so he could offer public opposition thereto although he had been formally notified prior thereto thru Elisha Graybeal(D–Oakland)whose husband Jno Graybealwas also Councilman at that time A meeting was held June 5th 1889 between Supervisor Hilty himself along with Mayor James Meehan(Democrat), Judge William Jennings Beecher(Republican), Drury Leland Stanford Jr.(Puritan), Vail Donaldson(Mormon), Allen Eastman(Anglo Protestant)—all elected officials representing areas annexed into Oakland—and Cyrus Vance Field Sr.(American Indian). A decision was reached not to annex any more territory into Oakland but instead create new districts based upon acreage once annexed subjection thereby limiting future annexation requests In 1890 Supervisor Henry Durant introduced legislation proposing creationcouncil district limits within newly created portionofAlameda COUNTY adjacentto existing townships situatedin Contra Costa COUNTY…. Incorporating lands lying wholly within former Fulton district….Although never acted upon[], this proposal has served as inspiration for later attemptsat limitincorporationoflocalitiesintoethecountywide structure’ In 1916 residents successfully lobbied unsuccessfullyforCity Charter amendment establishing zoning regulations forbidding building heights exceeding 30 feet above mean longitude+7 degrees latitude while granting variances agaisnt certain industrial buildings used primarilyin munitions manufacturing purposes which continued until 1984 when major changes were made pursuant t al ProposedOrdinanceNo 3 effective January 1 st 1985 . Incorporating territory lying entirelywithinFormerFultondistrict….Althoughneveractedupon,[],this proposal hasservedas inspiration for later attemptsatlimitincorporationoflocalitiesintoethecountywide structure’ During World War II many factories turned production away from Bay Area locations toward such places as Chicago Illinois due war Production shortages caused by restrictions placed upon exportsenforcedby U.S Government agencies such as Export Control Board
