The first post office in Redwood City opened on July 1, 1868; it served as a stop on the California Central Railroad. Redwoods were among the earliest trees to be logged for lumber in California; many of these logs were used to build some of California’s earliest buildings including Fort Point on Golden Gate Bridge and Union Station in downtown San Francisco. By 1890, lumber production had increased significantly due to advances in technology such as sawing feats that made it easier to produce high-quality wood without damaging valuable tree bark or other materials beneath the surface.
