San Mateo, California is a city located in Northern California. The city was founded on December 12, 1853 by General George C. Marshall as part of the Rancho San Francisco y Mijares district. As of the 2010 census, its population was 238,827. The name comes from Spanish San Miguel and means "Saint Michael." The original location of the town was at the foot of Mount Diablo where it now stands. In 1867, the town was moved upriver to what is today's Hayward Valley. There were several large fires in San Mateo during the 1870s which caused extensive damage to buildings and gardens. In 1916, San Mateo became a city under state law and adopted an official motto: "Nuestra ciudad es bella." (Our city is beautiful). The current City Hall building was built in 1915 on land gifted by William Randolph Hearst. It replaced an earlier structure which burned down in 1904. The first permanent English settlement in San Mateo County was at Alcatraz, located on the mainland side of San Francisco Bay. The purpose of the fortification was to keep Anglo-Americans from landing on the island and taking over the mission there. The fortifications were not successful and were abandoned in 1846. A second attempt at Fort Point was made in 1851 but it also failed. In 1854, Captain Folsom founded a small town near present-day Hayward, California named Folsom after himself and Colonel James Doolittle of the United States Army's First Cavalry Regiment who had led an expedition against Native Americans inbounds about 50 miles east of San Francisco Bay. The first post office for Folsom was opened in1856, with Wm Higginson as postmaster. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General George Custer's cavalry unit destroyed a Confederate battery nearpresent-day Fremont while pursued by Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Sutter (later governor of California). In 1865, following the war, General John Brougham arrived at Alcatraz to take possession of it as part of his military occupation duty during Reconstruction. He donated land to form Hayward Village which became a community center and shopping area for locals and visitors alike. After leaving Alcatraz in 1868, Brougham developed8 acres adjoining his former encampment into what is now called Brougham Park honoring him for this donation. "Alcatraz" continued to be used by Ulysses S Grant until its abolition as an asylum for mental patients on April 14 th , 1890 due to overcrowding; later becoming "Saratoga". "Folsom" became "Hayward" until 1959 when that name changed again to "San Mateo". It is interesting to note that both initial settlements (Alcatraz/Folsom & Hayward) are located within today's city limits - another reminder that these early arrivals boldly pushed boundaries while seeking new opportunities and experiences!
