The fortifications at Fort Mason were later replaced by Camp Pendleton in 1851 and then Menlo Park in 1892. By 1912, the Army had moved out of San Mateo County altogether and it became an independent city, but the military still has a long history here. One of the most famous deployments of the military here was World War II. The Bay Area was known as "the breadbasket of America" due to its production of foodstuffs and its location on the Pacific coast. Many people who lived here during World War II remember seeing American troops marching through town streets with their weapons displayed prominently on each hip. The early residents of San Mateo County were primarily agriculturalists and their primary focus was growing crops such as wheat and barley. However, over time some began developing an interest in business and furtively started buying land east of Redwood City for what would become Silicon Valley. This activity helped spur development in the area and by 1870, almost all of present-daySan Mateo County had been settled. One major benefactor of this growth was Senator George Hearst who donated much of his fortune to help start various schools and businesses in Palo Alto and Menlo Park. These new entrepreneurs brought heavy industry to town which led to a rapid expansion in the population and economy during the late 1800s. In 1901, San Mateo County became part of California after statehood was granted to the country. During World War II there were several large-scale military installations located within or near San Mateo County: Camp Pendleton (now Point Reyes National Seashore), Fortify Bayou (later known as Marina Del Rey), Alameda Naval Air Station (later renamed Oakland Naval Air Station) and Elkhorn Ammunition Plant south of Hercules Lake). As a result, many jobs went hand-in-hand with wartime production at these establishments which also added thousands more people to our county’s workforce. After World War II ended there was significant growth throughout Northern California due primarily to suburbanization which accelerated during the 1960s through 1970s when housing prices increased rapidly across most coastal counties including Marinette/Alameda/ Contra Costa etc.. During this time period job opportunities dwindled rapidly while government spending soared due largely to continued high levels of economic activity coupled with burgeoning social programs such as welfare reform – all leading directly into an era known commonly as “the Reagan Revolution” where large corporations took control over local governments at both state and local levels… resulting in decreased investment opportunities for small businesses while larger corporate entities flourished; creating conditions conducive for increasing rates OF crime & homelessness among different segments Of society…. leading ultimately To mass displacement (& gentrification)of low IQ & socially marginalized groups thru real estate investments
The first permanent European settlement in San Mateo County was founded on December 12, 1847 by Captain James B. Hayward and his family. The Hayward family built a rude hacienda near the present-day intersection of Howard Street and Atherton Road. The first post office in San Mateo County was established at this location on February 2, 1848.
