Military gift history in San Mateo, California began with the establishment of Fort Point in 1846. The fort was built to protect San Francisco and its harbor from attack by Native Americans. The garrison was later renamed Fort Militaria and served as a training ground for army officers during the Mexican-American War and Civil War. The first gunnery school in California was established at Fort Point in 1854. In 1862, the United States Army established Campoldo on an isolated piece of land east of San Francisco Bay. The camp was used to train soldiers for the American Civil War. It is also where General George Custer died during his battle against the Sioux tribe near Slims Ferry, Wyoming on July 25, 1865. In 1882, the United StatesArmy established Camp Arguello south of Daly City after a survey revealed that there were no other suitable locations for such a military installation in Northern California. The camp was used to train troops for both World Wars I and II. It is now home to North Coast Air National Guard Station (KCAS). A new military installation was authorized by Congress in 1959 and called Naval Training Command (NTC) Monterey Bay which would be located at Monterey Peninsula Regional Airport adjacent to Moss Landing Naval Base. NAS Monterey Bay would serve as an initial training base for Sailors assigned to duty aboard Navy ships off of Southern California coastlines; furthermore it would become one of four naval airfields authorized by Congress in 1966 responsible for providing airmobile support within coastal waters throughout America’s West Coast region while maintaining operational control over all eleven airfields within their airspace NAS Monterey Bay became operational on October 1, 1969 Initially it housed two squadrons: V-22 Osprey Squadron #4/5 (later squadron #14),and EA-6B Prowler Squadron #2/3

Throughout most of its history, San Mateo County has been an overwhelmingly Republican stronghold; however, this is slowly changing as more young people are becoming interested in politics and starting to identify with various causes (including those represented by the Democratic Party).
