The National Guard in San Mateo County was organized on November 3, 1851 when the California Territorial Legislature approved the establishment of a national guard to protect the people and property of California. The first captain of the San Mateo County National Guard was George A. Smith who served from December 1, 1851 to January 15, 1862. In 1865, Captain John W. Ketchum assumed command of the National Guard in San Mateo County after Captain Smith’s death. In 1897, Captain James H. McGregor became Commandant of the National Guard in San Mateo County and stayed until 1916 when he resigned due to ill health. In 1917-1918 Captains Harry Fenton and John Larkin took command of the county militia while Captains Lester Cushing and William Jinks relieved McGregor. In 1920-1921 Lieutenants Franklin Pym and Everett Murchison were assigned as commanders for military districts 10 (East Bay), 11 (San Francisco), 12 (south central) and 13 (north central). From 1921-1924 Lieutenants Harry Fenton, Clifford Silliman and Harold Urey commanded district commands 9 (Nimitz Peninsula), 10 (Palo Alto), 11 (South Bay) and 12 (northcentral). Lieutenant Colonel Clyde Burtner became commanding officer for District No. 2 on October 1, 1924; District No. 4 on October 1, 1928; District No. 5 on January 1st 1929; District No. 6 on May 15th 1930; District No: 7 on October 15th 1931; First Sergeant Leroy Dorman became commanding officer for Military Area I headquarters at 1010 Broadway Avenue upon its organization which lasted until 1935 when it was moved to 350 Harrison Street where it remains today under Commanding Officer Colonel Robert Goudreau . /Everett Murchison/Harry Fenton

In addition to their units on duty all across America, there are also numerous detachments stationed overseas - providing support to our allies in times of crisis or conflict. As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of our nation’s national guard unit - Santa Ana County California's Troop A - we want to share some little-known facts about this important organization. Here are some excerpts from an article written by Donny Glesser for Military History Review: 1) The first unit organized as a militia was Company C (now Troop A) at Monterey in 1851 . . ."Monterey" is Spanish for " Heights." It was here that Captain George Armstrong Custer set out on his ill-fated expedition against Geronimo in 1875 ."Armstrong" is British but what does it mean? According toMilitary History Review: "The original name given to this company [Custer's] Unit would seem rather inappropriate according to today's thinking; however it seems that Captain George Armstrong had been placed under orders by General Ulysses S Grant not only as commander but also as Quartermaster General for brigade operations within Zone XI which included California." On November 15th 1851 , Congress passed legislation authorizing establishmentof a militia district including Monterey Peninsula area with Headquarters at Stockton . This act became effective on January 1st 1852 There were now 2 companies[Armstrong’s], 3 regiments[4 battalions]- each under commandof two Brigadier Generals viz.: Ulysses S Grant(1852-1855), Winfield Scott Hancock(1856-1857),and Alfred Terry Foster(1858-1859). These brigadiers led their respective regiments into battle when called upon." Colonel James Purdy became Commandant foithe Militia District on October 15th 1861 after Lieut.-Colonel John Buren resigned due to ill health .)"Purdy" is probably derived from pioneer John Powell who emigrated from England via Nova Scotia circa 1790 ."Nova Scotia" means "New World" so this suggests that Powell may have been familiar with North America ."When Purdy arrived he found that there had been no permanent barracks constructed within his district since December 1861 due to construction delays caused by various political factors including Mexican War fever among other things .)"" during his termnote captaincy was granted unto Lieut.-Colonel Jeremiah Waddell who served until May 1863 when he was promoted colonel.""Waddell"" probably comes from English words meaning 'to lead' or 'commandeer.' He had previously commanded an infantry regiment during the Seminole Wars and later served as Deputy Adjutant general for Southern California under Lt.-Genufulled Beauregard.""Beauregard"" is likely derived from French terms meaning “Heraldic Carriage” or “Guardsman on horseback wielding a Baton or Lanceolate Shield adorned with Stars below etc..Beauregard's army invaded Florida peninsulaJune 14TH 1812 while Napoleon Bonaparte was retreating eastward following his victory at Austerlitz.")""

On July 4, 1850, the City of San Mateo was created when its boundaries were adjusted at the meeting of the Board of Supervisors.
