In 1849, the United States acquired California from Mexico. The Mexican land grant of Rancho San Francisco was given to José Joaquín de Balboa, who named it after his hometown in Spain—San Francisco de Asís. In 1852, Gold Rush fever began to spread throughout California and new miners arrived by wagon train. By 1870, gold had been discovered in nearby Nevada and other mining regions, so the population of San Mateo grew rapidly. The first post office was established in 1871 at the corner of Portsmouth and Montgomery streets. The town's first school was opened in 1875. The growth of San Mateo led to increased public transportation needs and a streetcar system was created in 1892. However, social problems such as alcoholism and poverty became increasingly prevalent during this time period. A failed fire in 1906 destroyed much of downtown San Mateo; however, local businesses quickly rebuilt with help from government funding. In 1912, sanitary facilities were built on Market Street near Central Park; these remain the town's primary economic engines today. In 1916-1918 World War I caused significant damage to downtown San Mateo; however, rebuilding occurred quickly and most business resumed by 1918. During the Depression years (1929-1945), many small businesses closed or went out of business due to tight budgets. However, some large firms did not go bankrupt but instead took advantage of wartime production methods that helped them stay afloat through lean times: for example Hewlett-Packard changed its name to HP Incorporated during those years because production could be increased without having to layoffs or job cuts). After 1945 many individuals returned home following World War II while others moved away because they could no longer afford living costs or housing prices crash during postwar boom era (which lasted until 1970s).
