San Mateo County is located in the East Bay of San Francisco, California and has a population of over 200,000. The county was created on November 3, 1847 from part of Contra Costa County. The original land grant for San Mateo was to Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla. In 1868, the name was changed to San Mateo after John Sutter became its first sheriff. On January 17, 1850, the first post office opened in San Mateo with Wm. Halsey as its first employee. The town of Redwood City started to form around this time and by 1853 it had a population of 506 people. By 1870 the town had grown to 1,500 people and by 1880 it had grown to 4,500 people. In 1865 the US Congress passed an act that established Stanford University and by 1870 Stanford had 9 students living on campus (the school only began admitting male students in 1885). Between 1850-1870 there were also several other small towns forming in what is now San Mateo County including: Arboga (laterReading), Belmont (now Walnut Creek), Cow Hollow (later Pleasanton), Dalton (now Dublin), Emeryville (now Oakland) and Hillsboro( later Hercules). During this time many technological advancements were made such as: photography which was developed at nearby Mount Allison School; radar; electric lights; autos/trucks/cars etc.; waterboating which was popular among locals due to itsCrystal Spring Marina being located just north of Livermore Point on Menlo Park Avenue; ice skating which became very popular during wintertime; surfing which soon became very popular due to Daly Island being a short distance away from Daly City
The area now known as San Mateo County was originally part of Alta California, which included present-day California and Nevada. The land was granted to Juan Bautista de Anza by the Spanish for his discovery of the route from Mexico City to Sacramento in 1769. The first European settlement in San Mateo County was at Gilroy on March 16, 1799 by Pedro Fortunato Menendez and José Joaquín Balboa. By 1821, about 9% of the population lived in towns scattered throughout the rural counties that made up Alta California. In 1853, when most of Alta California became Mexican territory after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, San Mateo County remained a part of Mexican America until it became an American state on November 6, 1848.
