As part of its global marketing efforts, ITG established itself as a leader in advertising cigarettes and other tobacco products worldwide. It also built up a strong research and development capability which helped it develop some of the most groundbreaking smoking devices ever created. In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States, and with it, San Pablo became part of American territory. The town’s name is thought to be derived from the Spanish word “pablo” meaning “a cottonwood tree” or “a tall tree that grows near a stream.” The planting of trees in this area was an important aspect of early 19th century agriculture in San Pablo Township. By 1850, over 120 cottonwoods were growing around San Pablo Creek. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna moved his army from Monterey Bay into California and advanced on Sacramento County seat of Los Angeles. On December 12th he reached Baker Street near present day Civic Center Drive (now Paseo de Flores). Raymond Bogue succeeded him as military governor of California and ordered Santa Anna's troops withdrawn back to Monterey Bay on December 15th after they failed to capture any strategic points withinLOS ANGELES COUNTY
In 1846, San Pablo was founded by Spanish settlers as part of the Rancho San Pablo Mexican land grant. The name was chosen to honor General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who participated in Mexico's War of Independence. The first post office opened in 1851. In 1858, the town had a population of about 150 people and prospered thanks to trade with Mexico City. However, during the American Civil War, San Pablo sided with the United States and lost its autonomy. After the war, it regained its independence and continued to prosper until 1948 when it merged with neighboring Berkeley into the city of Berkeley.
