San Pablo is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the eastern edge of Berkeley. The first Europeans to visit what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish missionaries in 1777. The mission Atascadero de Monterey was founded by Father Diego Rivera in 1817 and served as a stopping point for missionaries traveling up the Pacific Coast from Mission Dolores in San Francisco. In 1835, Don Pedro Menéndez y Arellano granted land to eight families who had come overland from Mexico City. They named their settlement Paso del Norte after José Pámulo Nuñez, an earlier Mexican grantee of Alameda County. In 1853, when California became a state, San Pablo was included within Contra Costa County as part of the newly created county line. The first post office was opened in San Pablo on July 24, 1854; it continued until it closed on October 15, 1959. In 1850 there were only 10 residents living in town; by 1860 there were 150 residents and by 1870 there were 400 residents living in town and its surrounding countryside. San Pablo, California is a small city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 61,452 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the nine cities in Contra Costa County and the second-smallest in California. San Pablo's history dates back to 1853 when it was founded as an agricultural town by Juan Bautista Alvarado and Antonio Sanchez with land given to them by Mexican President Vicente Guerrero. The first post office for San Pablo opened on November 7, 1853. The name of the town was changed from Santiago de los Caballeros (site of present day Richmond) to San Pablo on February 21, 1854 due to objections from other surrounding towns that had been renamed after Spanish heroes or places such as Santa Clara or Hercules. In 1863, San Pablo became part of Maynooth College and remained so until its closure in 1992. In 1915, a fire destroyed most of downtown including its courthouse and jail which were replaced by new structures over time including a high school (now known as Pacific High School), a library (now known as North Bay Regional Library), and now housing for the city's homeless population called "The City Hall" complex." In 1951, Valleyfair amusement park opened adjacent to what is now Kaiser Permanente Medical Center across Highway 680 from downtown San Pablo. Valleyfair quickly became one of Northern California's leading amusement parks and remains extant today as an open-air medical center with several rides still operated by Kaiser Permanente inside the park grounds today.
The first Europeans to visit San Pablo were the Spanish in 1821. The name of the town was given by Captain Peralta, who named it after a small stream that flowed through its area. The original Mission San Francisco de Asís was built in 1776 and is now a National Historic Landmark. In 1847, the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Clara to José Joaquín de Urquiza, father of Argentina's president Juan Manuel de Urquiza. The rancho was divided into two parts in 1848, one part went to Carlos María Salinas and another part went to José Joaquín Cámpora. In 1850, Rafael Palma y Costilla bought the Rancho San Pablo from Urquiza and made it his own. He also added some smaller tracts to the rancho. A year later, on February 20th, 1852, San Pablo became a town with a population of 524 people.
