In 1821, the Mission San Pablo was founded on the site of a former mission in what is now San Pablo District. The mission became known as one of California's most important religious destinations and was visited by thousands of people from around the world over its years of existence. In 1847, after more than a century in operation, the Missions were secularized and converted into a state park. The area that today constitutes San Pablo District was annexed to Berkeley County in 1852, making it part of the city of Berkeley. The early history of San Pablo DISTRICT can be traced back to 1797 when Spanish missionaries arrived in Alameda COUNTY to establish an agricultural colony. They named their new settlement "San Pablo" after St. Paul's Chapel on Monterey Peninsula where they had been living since 1796. Under Mexican rule, many missions were closed or abandoned throughout California due to lack of resources or competition from outside forces such as gold seekers and Native Americans. After Mexico dissolved its empire in 1821, many missions (including San Pablo) reverted back to private ownership and were little used again until shortly before American annexation in1846 when President Polk issued Executive Order No. 1083 which ordered all public land within California given to United States citizens for military use should hostilities break out between America and Mexico2 . paddlewheeler In 1865, when Doniphan Ranchoutenberg applied for grazing rights along El Sobrante Creek just east of town limits3 , three men - George Fenton (the owner), James Gee (Gee & Sons), William Wetherbee - objected vehemently4 . A day later they met with Doniphan who announced his intention to build a mill on the creek if they did not consent7 . It wasn't until 1870 that anyone actually built anything near town limits8 . In 1876-77 there was much excitement at news that granite blocks quarried near Petaluma had finally been discovered9 ; however this excitement quickly died down because it seemed only local farmers could get hold of them10 . Nevertheless, some snails were found inside these blocks11 so soon enough someone got interested12 ! It wasn't until 1886 that brickmaking began13 ! From here on things started rapidly downhill for both businesses14 ! However even though brickmaking failed initially it remained one of Petaluma's mainstay industries until about 191015 !"
The first Europeans to visit San Pablo were the Spanish, who named it San Pablo because of a fig tree that grew in the area. The Mexican people called it Cumnahua and the American Indians called it Nacimiento because of its rich soil. The first white person to live in San Pablo was John Fenton, who owned a small farm near the river. In 1819, Englishman John Rourke came across Fenton's farm and decided to move there. He built his house on what is now Callahan Avenue. For many years, San Pablo was a sleepy little town with few residents. However, in the 1830s, when gold was discovered nearby, interest in the area waxed and waned accordingly. By 1840, about 100 people lived here; however, by 1850 only six remained due to development along the riverside strip between Hearst Ranch and Mill Creek. When war broke out in 1846-47 and General José Joaquin Murieta tried unsuccessfully to cross over from Sonoma County into California throughSan Pablo – an event which became known as “The Great Californian Gold Rush” – most of these people left for other parts of California or returned home before hostilities ended two years later
