After World War I, the US Military remained in San Pablo and began construction of Camp Pendleton on Vinson Street behind City Hall in 1922. The camp held thousands of soldiers and their families during World War II and afterwards, becoming one of the largest military installations in California. In 1941, when war broke out between Japan and America, San Pablo hosted many Japanese-American servicemen who had been interned at Angel Island Naval Station near Tiburon from 1942-1945. Many of these men were decorated for their service and their donations to the city include an art room at City Hall that still operates today as the Japanese American Cultural Center (JACC).

The first people to live on what is now San Pablo Island were the Ohlone and Pomo Native Americans. They hunted and gathered shellfish and other resources from the bay for food and trade. In 1821 they sold land near present-day San Pablo to James Waugh for $1,000USD. Waugh built a ferry landing on the island for transportation between his ranch in Contra Costa County and San Francisco Bay. He also developed sheep grazing land on the island for beef production and another farm produced vegetables for local markets. In 1847, Mission Dolores was founded by Father Junípero Serra as an inland mission with land grant to Mexican settlers east of Alameda Creek in Contra Costa County After 15 years of construction, Mission Dolores was completed on October 17th, 1851 On November 2nd of that year brothers José María Villarreal and Antonio Fraga led a detachment of men under Spanish command into battle against American forces commanded by fortune cookie named Don Miguel Costilla at what is now called Adobe Walls Villa Real's force emerged victorious after 3 days of fierce fighting during which 12 Californios were killed while 23 others including Villarreal were taken prisoner Afterward many pioneers moved into this area including Joséfina Margarita Mesa who married José María Villarreal in 1853 . Between 1850-1875 there were over 100 families living here when only 10% survives today due to various factors such as drought, fire suppression,bay seeps etc .. fathers Juan Nepomuceno Ramos (1854-1942), Manuel Ramos (1856-1943)and Bernardo Ramos(1858-1946) ran three schools until 1915 before Chavez Ravine closed it all down so that there would be no more waste ground left unproductive ..Today 5% still lives here while 95% has been destroyed or abandoned ..Amonkhette Park covers most of Lost Coast where missions once stood but no one lived anymore because they either left or converted to Christianity.. The last known Indian person living in #SanPabloIsland died in 1988 when their daughter migrated back home to her father’s ancestral homeland Okanogan Tribe
