The San Pablo Naval Shipyard was established in 1887 and became the primary naval shipyard for the city of San Pablo. The yard held a large inventory of navy ships dating back to the 1870s, when it was first built as part of Commodore John D. Stockton’s Mare Island Navy Yard. In 1902, the yards moved to its current location on Don Pedro Drive inSan Pablo and began production of destroyers, submarines, torpedoes, and other military vessels. From World War II until 1976, San Pablo Naval Shipyards produced warships for both America and Great Britain. During this time period, many notable sailors and officers worked at San Pablo Naval Shipyards including Admiral Chester Nimitz (the first U.S. Admiral to become Commander-in-Chief of American forces in Asia), Rear Admiral Herbert L. Collett (U2/Eagle eye photographer during the Vietnam War), Rear Admiral Cmdr., Alfred Momyer (Commanding Officer, aircraft carrier USS Enterprise during Task Force 58), Commodore John D. Stockton (Director of Marine Forces Western Pacific) and many more. San Pablo is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 17,814 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in Northern California and the third-largest in San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco and Oakland. The name "San Pablo" means "Stronghold of the Franciscan Mission." The first Europeans to visit what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish Missionaries from Burgos, Spain, who founded Rancho Santa Clara de las Pacificas on November 8, 1795. They named their new mission San Rafael del Potrero because it was located near a ranch called Palo Alto (now part of Hayward). On May 25, 1816 by order of Presidio Governor Manuel Micheltorena (a fellow Spaniard), José Castro married Maria Antonietta Bautista Preciado in a ceremony at Alamo Square within sight of modern day Berkeley. She bore him four children: José Maria Concepcion age 7; María Luz Age 4; Antonio Ignacio age 2; and Raúl Ignacio age 1 year old. After 10 years of intermittent missions with no success at converting Native Americans living east of San Francisco Bay to Christianity they decided to abandon their settlements there in 1834 and return southward across the bay to what is now Contra Costa County. The town site was chosen for its convenient location between Antioch on the north shorelines of San Pablo Creek and El Sobrante on the south shorelines of Sammamish Creek. A adobe courthouse was built in 1837 which served as county seat until 1850 when voters chose Stockton as county seat instead In 1851 James Waddell became manager or general agent for this newly formed district which included all but part of Contra Costa County including present day San Pablo City Ulysses S Grant visited this area during his military campaigns against Mexican forces during his presidency1865-1868 campaign trail through this area he stopped at Our Lady's Church located on Broadway corner El Camino Real Avenue

The city of San Pablo in California was founded on December 29, 1821 by Juan José Cámpora and his wife Margarita. It became a part of Alta California Colony on January 24, 1846. The city was named for thePadre de la Paz Parish Church located in the center of town. In 1851, San Pablo had a population of about 10,000 people and was considered to be one of the most important towns in Alta California. In 1865, San Pablo became an independent city under Mexican rule. On October 15 of that year,Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all American citizens between the ages of 20 and 64 to leave Mexico for good or face execution. Many Americans who were unable to flee chose to stay and fight for Mexico instead. The Siege of San Pablo lasted from October 15-20th1865 during which time almost 150 American soldiers died trying to defend their homes against Mexican forces commanded by General Santa Anna. On November 7th 1870 Californian Governor Manuel Micheltorena approved the annexation by California of all but 5 villages within Mexican Baja California Province including San Pedro Creek Villa (San Pedro Creek Township). This was done as part of efforts to centralize power in Californias fledgling government following the Mexican War victory over United States forces at Tepic Heights on September 14th, 1848. At this time much land east and south of missions downtown lay outside what is now San Pablo Avenue surrounded by vineyards and orchards until gridlock forced demolition in 1967 due to development pressures surrounding Highway 101A/B/C known then as Clifton Road Today’s Mission District contains many reminders from early 19th century life such as Mission Chapel where services are still held today;the first schoolhouse built in Baja California; Merchants Row where merchants sold goods from their businesses;a tannery operated by José Arguelles near present day Third Street;an old arsenal used by Marines during World War II;and more recent additions like English School (closed 2005),Pasadena Playground (closed 1975),and Chavez Ravine Park (open since 1984) making up what has been called “the historic core”ofSan Pablo’s neighborhoods Noteworthy examples also include several historical buildings that have been extensively renovated or replaced since they were neglected or occupied only by history books:El Pico Building (now City Hall),Old Post Office building at 9800 Gilman Ave.,Bank Of America building at 8333 Clifton Ave.,Potosi Adobe house at 11600 Del Norte Rd.,Pharmacy building at 6609 Third St.,and Market Square Shopping Center at 6000 Fourth St..
