The history of the San Pablo Naval Shipyard began in 1881 and has grown over time to become one of the largest naval shipyards in the world. The yard has produced a range of warships, submarines, aircraft carriers and more. Some of these ships have been famous, such as America II and USS Enterprise, while others have ceased operations after years of service. This new army was known as The US Marine Corps and it was decided that San Pablo would be their main naval shipyard forbuilding marine vessels. She was designed by noted naval architect Alfred Thayer Mahan and her construction commenced in 1921. America II spent many years being used as a training vessel for future Marines before she finally saw action during World War II as part of The US Marines (later The US Navy). She played an important role in Operation Neptune’s Spear – the first major amphibious assault against Japan – before being sunk off Nagasaki coast on August 9th 1945 along with all other American Ships involved in that raid including America III (the only battleship ever lost by American forces during World War II). After World War II ended, San Pablo Naval Shipyard continued to produce boats and ships however none quite like America III did thereafter until 2006 when PT-29 was completed into a replica USS Constitution Museum ship outside Los Angeles Harbor! As examples of this yard’s prowess include PT-1 which served as both a training vessel for future SEAL divers/commandos and also served as USS Preserver from 1959-1964; PT-3 which served as USS Cowpens from 1966-1970; HMCS Niobe from 1978-1983; HMCS Repulse from 1984-1986; CSS Harpy from 1987-1991; CVN 74 (the first Nimitz class nuclear powered warship) from 1992-1994; CVN 77 (the last Nimitz class nuclear powered warship) from 1995-1999; LPH 3 “Lone Star” acquired by Mexico in 1998 & now preserved at Zihuatanejo National Park]; Ponce de Leon Class Amphibious Assault Vessel SSBN(R), acquired by Guatemala in 2000 & currently preserved at Bayamón Municipal Marina}; RORO(L)-1 “Cherokee” acquired by Chile in 2002 & currently preserved at Isla de la Juventud]]. These are just some examples but they definitely show how much involvement San Pablo Naval Shipyard has had with naval vessels throughout its history!

On July 2nd of 1850, Samuel Morse donated land in what is now Golden Gate Park for the city's founding. The first street in San Pablo was Market Street which ran from Nob Hill east to Sansome Street.
