The town of San Pablo, located on the banks of the Santa Clara River in Contra Costa County, California was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1781. The name San Pablo comes from a mission built there in 1821 by padre José Francisco Cámpora. The town proper was platted in 1824 and became a part of Walnut Creek Township. In 1851, it become part of Contra Costa County as part of the Rancho Sanchez addition to the county. The population grew rapidly after railroad construction began nearby in the 1850s and 1860s, and sugar production began arriving in San Pablo during the late 1800s. By 1910, San Pablo had a population of over 100,000 people. During World War II, many Japanese American citizens were interned here due to fears that they would be used as slave labor or battlefield casualties. In 1945, most of these Internment Camp detainees were finally released when Japan surrendered effective October 2nd at 9:39pm PT under an agreement reached between Ulysses S. Grant and Emperor Hirohito. Many residents still live near Camp Iwo Jima today as descendants do not want their history associated with that site alone
The first post office in San Pablo was established on October 12, 1871. The original name of the town was "Palo Alto." The town was renamed to its current name on July 4, 1892.
