San Rafael is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 26,883 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the San Rafael Peninsula between Sausalito and Monterey Bay. It is adjacent to Tiburon Peninsula on the north and Pacific Grove on the south. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Marin County were Missionaries of Jesus in 1821. With its rich springs and inland location, San Rafael became known as "the wine capital of America". In 1868, a group of entrepreneurs founded what would become Apple Inc., with headquarters in nearby Redwood City. By 1863, however, most of Silicon Valley had been developed including San Rafael. Today's downtown district was built around Adobe Road (now US-101) around 1890 by Lorenzo Snow and others who leased land from Rancho Santa Fe for this purpose. This area still contains some old mission Revival style buildings dating back to that time such as Mission Dolores Chapel (1892). Other Significant buildings include Stinson Beach Hall/ Recreation Center (1912), Masonic Temple No 2 (1915), Chevron Building (1935), and Donnybrook Inn & Suites Resort & Casino (2006). In 1951, many people within San Rafael voted to leave Marin County because of concerns about taxes being too high relative to other communities in the county. They formed their own government known as "Rancho Margarita" which functioned until 1984 when they merged with Marin County under a new political system called " supervisors democracy". As part of this merger process much property within town boundaries was annexed by Marin County making it difficult for residents who wanted to keep their community intact while living within limits set by county planners; nevertheless many few have done so over the years despite often high costs associated with maintaining infrastructure outside town limitsThese challenges notwithstanding, over time many small businesses have started up within town borders due largely to access to ample transportation options available close at hand or via suburban commute

San Rafael was founded in 1849 by John Sutter and his brother, Ygnacio. The city is named for the San Gabriel Mountains which are located to the east of the town. Thebrothers were inspired to name their new settlement after a nearby mountain because they thought it would be a better place to grow crops. In 1851, Sutter acquired some land from the Mission Santa Clara de Asis and built a small log cabin on it. In 1853, he sold his land to another man, Lorenzo Dowling, who started to build a gristmill on the site. In 1856, Dowling added an adobe building to the mill which served as both its office and residence. By 1861, dowling had also built a store and two churches in San Rafael. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many Japanese Americans living in California moved into San Rafael and some of them continued business operations at the mill until it closed in 1951. SAN RAFAEL CULTURE buffs will recognize several buildings located within walking distance of downtown: The Pacific Art Museum (opened in 1962), City Hall (opened in 1976),and Recreation Building (opened in 1984). One other notable building is Church of Our Lady Of Loreto which was constructed in 1904-05 as an appendage of Dowling's Victorian house on Third Street between Marin Avenue and First Street

Afterward, the population slowly increased again through the 1970s until 2000 when it reached its current level.
