The San Rafael Army National Guard Unit, commonly known as the "Ragamuffins," was organized on December 15, 1917. The unit was reactivated on February 14, 1942 and redesignated the 1st Infantry Division. It was inactivated on October 16, 1946. On November 6, 1941, the United States Military Academy Class of 1943 presented General George Custer with a gold pocket watch as a gift from their classmates. This event is generally considered to be the start of the US Army's involvement in World War II. On January 2nd 1944 an order arrived at Battalion Headquarters asking for volunteers to serve in Europe during World War II. On May 10th 1945 all active units were ordered into inactive status due to lack of manpower and equipment which would lead to future conflict with Japan. The unit that remained active under this designation until disbanding on October 16th 1946 was actually called "1st Infantry Division" (later changed back to "San Rafael") but it is more commonly remembered as "the Ragamuffins."

The United States Army Garrison San Rafael was established in 1851 and has been a part of the American military since that time. The present day garrison is located on the campus of Monterey Bay National Laboratory, which it served as until 1959.
San Rafael is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 23,895 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on April 15, 1853 by the brothers Joseph and Samuel Doheny. It became a city on December 1, 1906. San Rafael is located on what used to be the eastern edge of present-day Petaluma Valley. The first white person to live in what would become San Rafael was Jack London who arrived in 1851 during the Gold Rush and built his home near today's downtown. A post office called Rancho Los Gatos was established in 1854, and soon after other settlers began arriving including John Sutter who founded Sacramento City about two miles west of San Rafael. In 1860s a group of Alameda County farmers formed a club to promote agriculture and trade with inland communities such as Berkeley and Emeryville/Oakland. In 1875 when parts of Marin County were detached from Alameda County, San Rafaél applied for incorporation but it was denied because there were only men living here then (the women had already left for Angel Island). On February 6th 1870 citizens voted 3-1 in favor of incorporation by referendum after meeting at the Methodist Missionary Church which had been donated by Drinnon & Harvey Thomson (later Sir George Gilbert Scott). The town site chosen for its location on high ground overlooking Petaluma Valley made it easy to fortify against Native Americans who raided local villages sporadically throughout much of this era; also nearby lies what is now North Beach (the site where Fort Pointe Lipoma now stands) making it difficult for them to enter or raid without exposing themselves too closely to westerners. One result may have been that petrels nested near our current downtown buildings since their late 19th century Feeding Station #4 sat atop an early 20th century rock quarry next door; however no evidence has ever been found documenting this relationship between birds and humans before or after that date! San Rafael is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 3,397 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the San Francisco Bay Area since 1853. As of 2007, it had an estimated population of 4,757. The name "San Rafael" comes from Spanish meaning "holy river." The first permanent European settlement in what is now Contra Costa County was made by Father Junipero Serra and his party on November 15, 1769, when they founded the Presidio of Monterey on the site of present-day Hercules Heights. Father Serra named their new settlement after Saint Francis Xavier who had died in 1746. In 1853, as part of Mexican Statehood under General Antonio López de Santa Anna's rule, San Francisco became a province within Mexico and San Rafael became part of California. After several years of discussion among local officials over which town should be chosen to serve as its capital, Tomales came up with the idea for San Rafael and submitted it to California Governor John Paley on February 12th,. On April 10th 1860 Paley signed legislation creating Contra Costa County and giving it its current boundaries; including San Rafael along with other towns that agreed to become counties in order to form a unified region around the burgeoning city of San Francisco. At this time there were only about 2 dozen families living in what is now SAN RAFAEL--the majority being farmers who grew grapes and olives for export. In 1969 rumbles began emanating from inside the earth near Menlo Park; these led to construction of one million cubic yards (907 metric tons) worth of fill associated with Valley View Cemetery which would later house Palo Alto University campus buildings as well as housing for employees and students at nearby Stanford University while also accommodating overflow traffic during special events at Candlestick Park located across First Street from campus
The area now known as San Rafael was first populated by Native Americans, who called the area Tepa-zinc. The first European to visit the area was Francisco Bouchard in 1777, and he named the place after Saint Raphael of Rome. In 1824, a group of American businessmen founded what is now known as Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The company built a power plant on top of Mount Diablo, which became one of the largest electric companies in California. In 1906, San Rafael incorporated as a city.
