The San Rafael Coast Guard Station was established in 1915 and is the oldest coast guard station on the West Coast of North America. The station has a history that goes back to when it was founded as an observation post for fishermen on Point Reyes National Seashore. Since its inception, the Coast Guard Station has played an important role in keeping our coastal communities and environment safe. In 1955, the station became responsible for all coastal guarding activities within the City of San Rafael jurisdiction. In 1976, the Coast Guard Station moved from its original location on Point Reyes to its current site at 21st Street and Broadway in San Rafael. Today, the Coast Guard Station plays an integral role in protecting our coastline and economy by providing law enforcement services, conducting overflights and patrols,and maintaining communications with other agencies. In addition to its core duties, the Coast Guard Station also offers a variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, fishing, swimming and boating. The San Rafael Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement, public safety and coastal protection services for the community since 1881. In 1931, the first Police Department was established in the town and today there are six departments within the Coast Guard that provide a variety of services to the community. The San Rafael Police Department is also part of the Coast Guard.
In 1849, the Mexican government awarded a land grant to José Joaquín de San Rafael, a Californio settler. The gift included two square miles of present-day San Rafael and parts of what is now Mill Valley. From his rancho (land grant), San Rafael developed a small town that became one of the most important centers in California during the Gold Rush period. The town's first post office was established in 1852, and its first mayor was Don Francisco Sanchez y Ulloa. In 1860, San Rafael incorporated as a city under the name of Santa Clara. It was renamed San Rafael after General storekeeper John Pemberton who donated $5 for the renameinaction of City Hall on December 15, 1861. The original building still stands today as part of downtownSanRafael - home to many historical artifacts from the city's early years. Today, San Rafael is known for its art scene and its relaxed lifestyle which has led it to be called "the most uncrowded city in Northern California." Known for its wide range of cultural attractions including museums such as the Museum Of Modern Art and Point Reyes National Monument, restaurants such as L’Atelier de France and Pizzeria Bianco®, shopping at local boutiques such as Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue, wine tasting at Chateau Montrachet or Bottega Veneta*, tennis at La Marinéa Club* or Pacific Fair Park*, baseball at Angel Stadium or Stanford University* Athletics teams include both Men’s Professional Baseball (MVP) club team (.923 record since 1945)Xavier “Pitbull” Alvarez Almañaga (San Jose Earthquakes)* while Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) club team (2nd place finish in 2017) Kinsey Solis.*
The history of the Coast Guard can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first coast guard units were raised in New York City and Boston. The original Coast Guard was a volunteer force that defended America’s coasts from piracy and other threats. In 1915, the United States Congress created the Coast Guard Reserve to provide backup for the Regular Coast Guards in case of an emergency. The Reserve became a full-time service in 1952. Today, the Coast Guard has over 11,000 employees across 41 states and Puerto Rico. The Service provides essential law enforcement, Search and Rescue, maritime security, public health services, cultural outreach and more. The Coast Guard gift tradition began during World War II when servicemen contributed food and clothing to local agencies as part of the war effort. In 1953, President Dwight D Eisenhower issued Executive Order 13425 which called for gifts given by members of the military to civilian organizations such as local police departments or fire arms dealers “to be made without discrimination on account of race or national origin” (Dwight D Eisenhower Presidential Library). This order helped begin what is now known as “gift giving season” throughout America. Since then, many different types of items have been donated by members of the military to various organizations including schools, hospitals, libraries and more (U S Government). Over time there have also been special events such as Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies or National Defense Day ceremonies where items are auctioned off (National Defense Museum). The city of San Rafael is located in Marin County, California, on the shore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 38,815 at the 2010 census. It is the location of Mount Tamalpais and Monterey Peninsula National Park. In 1821, Mission San Rafael de Asís was founded by Franciscan missionaries in what is now Marin County. The mission became a parish within the Roman Catholic diocese of Sausalito in 1864. In 1876, when Rancho Rinconada Land Grant #4 was awarded to José Estevan Copley (1824-1898), he gave it to his brother Fernando for development into a town site. The first post office opened in 1850 and remained open until 1922; its last name change was to rancho san rafael in 1880. In 1906, during World War I, General John J Pershing ordered all US military forces out of Northern California because of Disease concerns. A detachment from the 9th Cavalry Regiment under Colonel George Armstrong Custer set up camp at Rancho Rinconada while their unit moved eastward through Sonoma Valley towards Yreka and then northward past Petaluma before halting near Montgomery after catching a cold. Campfires were started around 10 pm on July 8th as part of an evening ritual called "Palo Alto" - these fires continue to be seen today near Santa Cruz Creek just northeast of where Pismo Beach meets Point Reyes National Seashore Rancho Rinconada had been used as grazing land by Native Americans since Pre-history according to some researchers When American settlers arrived they found many Indians living here including Coast Miwok (the Lallam) who farmed this area for centuries . They also built extensive canals that crossed Coyote Creek which still exists today but is now known as Highway 1
The first white people in San Rafael were the Rios brothers, who arrived in 1821. The town was founded by José Antonio de Ríos, a soldier and entrepreneur, in 1825. The name of the current town was given to it by him. In 1849, San Rafael became part of California and was renamed after the Spanish city of Seville.
