The first documented mention of coffee in the area comes from 1847 when Antonio Gomez mentioned fresh figs being roasted near the riverbed. Coffee was not until 1865 that it began to be traded between different areas in what is now Marin County. The first commercial farm producing beans was founded in 1887 by Carlos Ghirardelli. With increased production and importation, coffee started becoming more affordable for people living in coastal areas such as San Francisco or Marin County. By 1915, there were 16 bean-growing businesses operating in San Rafael with an average output of $175,000 per year. The early 20th century saw some major changes to the way coffee was grown and processed. Roasting techniques changed from whole bean to ground beans which resulted in lower quality beans that were less flavorful than later years. In 1937, World War II led to a decrease in bean production as most farmers were deployed into battle overseas. However, due to increasing demand for coffee during peacetime (since 1945), new roasting techniques were developed which yielded even better tasting beans at a much lower price point for consumers around the world. By 1972, there were over 200 small roasters throughout Northern California responsible for processing 3 million pounds of coffee each day! San Rafael is a small town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Marin County were the Spanish who founded Mission San Rafael de Asís on July 26, 1776. The community of Point Reyes Station was established by the United States on December 6, 1821 as part of a fur trading post-mission system with Mexico City. Point Reyes Station served as a supply depot for American traders until it was abandoned in 1847 when maps designated it as part of Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1853, Rancho Rinconada Mexican land grant was made available to James Phelan and his brother John Doolittle for sheep ranching and farming purposes only. In 1860 Phelan sold some rights to John Steuart Kinney who developed an agricultural empire that included 80 square miles (230 km²) of fertile land around present-day San Rafael which he named Kinney Valley after himself and his wife's family member, Mrs. KinneySteuart They also acquired other holdings including several parcels within today's downtown area known collectively as "The Hill". The first school in San Rafael opened in 1861 when Mr. Kinney donated 3 acres (1 km²) of his farmland at the corner of Second Street and First Avenue for use as a schoolhouse. In 1865 Mrs. Kinney founded Ladies' College (later University High School), which became San Rafael Girls' Latin School before becoming Colegio de la SaludGirls' Academy in 1938; both schools are still open today.. As development increased along Second Street from passing motorists into DowntownSanRafael during lunchtime or evening rush hours starting about 1910 until World War II there were periodic street closures due to carpenters working on the new homes being built nearby - one such closure took place on November 15, 1922 concurrent with Thanksgiving Day Parade when most students had finished attending their families’ homes for dinner! Anyway no damage done although inconvenience caused

San Rafael was founded in 1849 by Captain George K. Brown, who landed on the peninsula with his ship the San Francisco on November 12th of that year. The town quickly grew, and in 1851 it became a Californio settlement under Mexican rule. In 1853, after California gained its independence from Mexico, San Rafael joined the new state of California as part of the newly created Monterey County. The years since have seen changes to the demographics of San Rafael- both due to annexation by other counties and immigrants moving into the town from out of state- but its economy has always been based around ranching and agriculture. In 1901, post office officials decided to change their name to San Rafael because it had become known as "the breadbasket" of California for its fertile soil and abundant fruits and vegetables. The name stuck until 1959 when it was changed again due to a fire that destroyed most of the downtown area. Today, San Rafael is an ethnically diverse community with people from all over Northern California living together in close proximity until periodic parades honoring their ancestors or cultural experiences are held at various locations throughout the town's history.

The area was part of Rancho San Rafael de la Purísima Concepción, a grant from the Mexican government. In 1821, Mexican President Agustín Manuel López De Santa granted land to the United States in what is now Marin County and part of Sonoma County. The town of Petaluma was founded by American settlers in 1849.
