In 1915, during World War I, billionaire George Westinghouse donated land in downtownSan Raphael for a national airfield called East Palo Alto Airport. The airport served as both RAF fighter-bomber training ground and home base for America's first jet fighters during World War II. After WWII ended in 1945, the airport reverted back to civilian use until 1989 when it was transferred from County hands to municipal control under then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein.
