San Rafael is a small town in Marin County, California, about 11 miles east of Sausalito and 9 miles south of Tiburon. At the time of its incorporation as a town on February 14, 1849, it had a population of only 25 people. It was named for San Rafael Cathedral in Mexico City. The first post office at San Rafael opened on July 14, 1848. The name might be derived from Visitacion Vallejo's claim that "the Redwoods stand near where we sit" which he found while exploring the area in 1846. A depot was built at present-day San Rafael for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1850. A store and hotel were built there soon after to serve the community. The railroad arrived early and did not have much impact on the growth of San Rafael until after it left in 1865 when construction began on what is now Interstate 5. The mainstay of local economy until around World War II was agriculture with some citrus production continuing until after the war; however, during most recent decades manufacturing has become more prevalent here including textiles (especially jeans), plastics (including shoes and car parts), automobiles and light industrial products such as telecommunications equipment (though many jobs have been lost due to online competition). A streetcar line linking downtown with Helendale opened in 1907 and became popular for tourists visiting Monument Valley National Park on its route from Pasadena to Helendale and back again. In 1909, fire destroyed most of downtown but a new building designed by architect Lloyd Wright was completed only a few blocks away at 101st Street and US-101/State Route 66 (now Hollywood Boulevard). This building served as the town hall until it burned down in 1934. After that fire, most public services were moved to Helendale which had more space for them than downtown did at that time. In 1936, voters passed an ordinance establishing Alcoholic Beverage Control District No. 1 within city limits (later known as MetroPCS District 5), which led to heavy industry growth around downtown including a plastics plant and two breweries which remain active today: Sierra Nevada Brewing Company (founded in 1989) and City Brewery (founded in 1893). On July 20, 1946, residents of San Rafael voted 25-to-4 to secede from Los Angeles County due to dissatisfaction with low taxes, poor service quality from government officials, traffic congestion caused by industrialists living near downtown rather than developing it properly, and lack of racial diversity among elected officials
