San Rafael is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 452 at the 2010 census. It is located on San Pablo Bay south of Marin City and east of Sausalito. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish Franciscans who founded Mission San Francisco de Monterey in 1795. The mission was abandoned in 1821 after an attack by Native Americans and the resulting battle between Mexican forces and the Franciscan missionaries left many dead. In 1836, when part of Napa County became part of California, San Rafael became part of Marin County. In 1870, John Sutter established Sutter's Fort at what is now Point Reyes National Seashore to defend against American fur traders raiding his property on the Golden Gate Peninsula. The fort served as a point of supply for his troops during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1868, Mayor Francis Wigglesworth had a plaque erected in honor of Ulysses S. Grant which read: "In memory of Commodore John C. Fremont who died July 6th last near this spot while leading a brigade from Petaluma into Mexico." On November 16, 1850, both sides in the American Civil War fought an event known asthe Grito Invasion that started with a demand for water by local farmers and ended with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna occupying much of Northern California including Point Reyes National Seashore

The town of San Rafael was founded in 1849 by Captain John Sutter and his men after they discovered the gold fields near present-day Santa Clara. The town grew rapidly and by 1876, it had a population of 4,000. In 1878, the city of San Francisco was founded on the peninsula that now forms downtown San Rafael. The two towns merged in 1892 to form what is now known as San Rafael City.
