San Rafael, California is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula. The towns of Point Reyes and Sausalito were founded by Spanish missionaries in 1795 and 1821 respectively. As part of the Rancho Tejon Mexican Land grant system, the Mission San Rafael Arcangelico (founded in 1795) was given to Mariano Vallejo in 1834. The town site was first surveyed by Jens Jensen in 1839 and named for Saint Raphael of Rome although no evidence supports this claim. A post office called "Rafael" was established at the site on February 14th, 1840. In 1863 an act of Congress renamed San Rafael after Major General George Bancroft who had served as Governor of California during the American Civil War. In 1896 a new ZIP code was created for Marin County when railroads began to be built there; 64901 became part of that code. After World War II most manufacturing left San Rafael but some high-tech companies such as Nike and Lockheed Martin have continued to operate here since then including Googleplex headquarters which opened in 1998 adjacent to Point Reyes National Seashore State Park
