The first European to visit what is now San Rafael was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. William Goldingay named part of Marin County "Rafaela" on November 8, 1821 for General Mariano Ramirez y Costilla, who had led an expedition from Mexico City against the United States under José Joaquín de Herrera y Costillas. A post office called Rafaélal opened in 1827 and was renamed Rafaela in honor of Don José Rafael Altañeda, governor of New Mexico during the Mexican War of Independence. The town began to grow rapidly when a canal was built connecting San Pablo Bay with Sacramento River via Redwood Creek and Bolinas Creek. At its peak growth in 1860, Rafaélal had a population of 10,000 people; however this number decreased as new development developed around the canal area and river mouth. The town center gradually lost its importance as transportation became more important and communication improved between communities along both routes.
