San Rafael is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The townsite of Sausalito was first settled by Spaniards in 1795 and quickly became a community of maritime interests due to its natural resources and its deep water harbor. In 1825, the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Cruz to Juan Bautista de Anza as a gift for his native land south of San Francisco Bay. With this grant came an exclusive right to build vessels larger than those used on the Great Lakes for trade with Mexico City. The site of present-day Sausalito was then known as Anza Cove because it lay between two bluff ridges overlooking Lake Mendocino.
