The annexation increased the size of SAN RAFAEL from 2 square miles to 5 square miles! When NORTH GILROY first started development (the name given to the area now adjacent to UC Davis), no one realized that they were annexing SAN RAFAEL - they just thought that their new neighbor had bought some land from them! The town of San Rafael was founded in 1849 by James W. Richardson, a Scottish-born entrepreneur. The first post office in the town was established in 1850. In 1853, Richardson built the first school in San Rafael and it was called the School of Industry and Science. In 1861, he donated land to build the first hospital in the town. The hospital was named after him and it is still in use today as a medical center. In 1865, Richardson married Julia Sweeney and they started a family.
