Navy deployed gift history in San Rafael, California goes back to 1887. The U.S. Navy stationed a detachment at what is now the Naval Air Station (NAS) El Toro in Southern California during World War II and returned there in 1944 following the end of the war. NAS El Toro became an active naval air station after hostilities ended and was home to numerous aircraft carriers and antisubmarine warfare vessels throughout the Cold War era. In 1951, NAS El Toro was decommissioned and its assets were transferred to NAS Point Mugu on Long Island as part of a larger realignment of military installations by Secretary of Defense James Forrestal. NAS Point Mugu served as a Naval Air Station until it was closed in 1978. From then through 1997, NAS Point Mugu's assets were reassigned to various navy deployments providing various opportunities for personnel to interact with one another including live fire exercises, naval exhibits, ship-to-shore ceremonies, receptions for visiting dignitaries, and more. The first deployment occurred on 1 December 1887 when USS Constitution sailed from Newport News Shipbuilding Corporation yard for deployment aboard USS Maine (LST-532). The vessel arrived at San Francisco Bay on 16 December 1887 en route from Yokohama Harbor where she had been undergoing repairs since departing Japan two days earlier! She joined forces with USS Olympia (APD-4), flagship of Admiral David Hunter's 3rd Fleet off Monterey Bay on 7 January 1888 during their annual cruisers' cruise along the southern coast of California! It was also this year that Commodore John Dennison assumed command of Destroyer Squadron 10 which included USS Constitution! That same month also saw USS Gwinston arrive from Hampton Roads en route from her voyage down the Pacific Coast! During her stay at Norfolk City she underwent repairs/updates before sailing into Golden Gate Strait on 12 February 1888! From 24 February - 8 March 1889 she patrolled off Northern California's southern shoreline performing coastal emergencies whileUSS Constitution visited Stockton and Sacramento ports! USS Constitution made her final port visit north of Santa Cruz County after leaving Mexico City late that night on 15 March 1889; however no events took place ashore as it would not be until 31 October 1990 when Commander Kenneth Epps led his squadron outbound from Kodiak Island towards Midway Atoll where they participate in Operation Deep Freeze followed by their return trip via Radiation Belt Path less than two weeks later! On 6 November 1890 USS Preble anchored off Monterey Peninsula concurrent with a large fleet assembled by Commodore John Jervisbeck including CSS Albemarle (CA-9), CSS Alabama (CVA-8), HMS Repulse (HXR 20), HMS Warrior (HXR 25)and HMCS Windsor Castle(LCH 52)! A week later Enterprise anchored offshore near Christmas Cove while sailboats towed several hundred coal cars across Half Moon Bayou towards Ensenada Harbor resulting in over $2 million worth coal being delivered to Refugio de la Raza that fall!! A total of 21 different ships toured NAS Point Mugu between 1951 – 1997 including 5 Nimitz Class Ships totaling 191 feet long x 22 feet wide x 9 feet deep capable housing up to 36 officers and crew members each!. These warships included: Washington state ferries USCGC Alaskan (PFG 71) & PCL(AGS 43) – both serving as Practice Cruises; nuclear submarines SSBN–381&382—both being used for maneuvers; amphibious assault vehicles LHD&LVT(HMMWV) & LAV(LAVMF)—both deploying during Exercise Desert Shield/Desert Storm; destroyers Argonaut(DDG 58), Essex(DE 1024), Kingsbury Heights(KHS 53)—all joining duty off Laguna Beach Marine Corps Base while Sealift Command loaded Carrier Wasp DDG 51 onto 19 occasions plus 2 drills; CVN 45 New Orleans embarking upon her first deployment located at Mule Valley Army Camp prior to transiting through Diego Garcia but no event took place ashore due TOYGO SailingDays concluding Saturday 11th Nov 1995!!! As a result we have nearly 400 years+of continuous naval Gift History taking place right here at NAS Point Mugi!!

The building replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire in 1868. City Hall served as the seat of government for San Rafael until 1916 when it moved to Northern California's Yuba County Courthouse which remains operational today. Another major event during this time period was the construction of Interstate 80 which passed through San Rafael adjacent to Central Avenue Business District (now called "Central Ave."). Interstate 80 played a significant role during both World War II and the 1959 assassination of President John F Kennedy because it allowed goods brought intoOaklandBay Bridgeheadto be unloaded at Pajaro River Terminal without having to go through downtownSanFernando or El Sobrante ().
