The San Rafael Naval Shipyard was founded in 1887 by Commodore George Atwood. The first ships were built there, including the USS California and USS Oregon. In 1907, the Navy purchased land at Point Reyes to build a naval shipyard.Construction began on the first USS Missouri in 1909 and continued until 1922 when it was replaced by the USS Iowa. The last ship to be built at San Rafael was the USCGC Python in 1961. Today, San Rafael is home to six navy ships: two frigates (USS Guam and USS Hawaii), a submarine (USS Pyrenees), an amphibious transport dock unit (LPD-27) and a minehunter/minelayer (LHD-8). As of 2019, all but one of these vessels are used for training or service out of Naval Base San Diego. The proximity to beaches in Southern California has resulted in many years of naval activity taking place here as well; most notably during World War II when both Northern California and Sonoma County were served by U.S. Naval Forces Europe aboard several destroyers and submarines while Bataan Peninsula hosted Task Force 77 which conducted airstrikes against Japanese forces during that war’s Battle of Leyte Gulf—the largest naval battle ever fought on earth. Additionally, Operation Neptune’s Spear took place off the coast of Santa Rosa County while underway off Catalina Island; this was an anti-submarine warfare campaign led by Amphibious Squadron 9 with participation from destroyer escorts and minesweepers operating from various points along the coast

SAN RAFAEL, California is a city located in Marin County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 97,554. The city is named after San Rafael Creek, which flows through it. The first permanent residents were Anglo-Mexican Missionaries who arrived in 1821 and founded what is now known asMission San Rafael de Asís. In 1827, Mexican independence was granted and the United States acquired control of California. The mission was secularized in 1850 and its land became part of Rancho Santa Clara del Valle Mexican national estate. In 1875, an act of Congress designatedSan Rafael a town to be built on the site of the missions by David Rice and others. When supervisors George Hearn and John Waddell proposed that Santa Clara become a city in 1912 they received popular support because rich people had been leasing land parcel by parcel within San Rafael for years before that time. The original downtown area includes three blocks bounded by Second Street (north), Third Street (south), Polk Street (east), Mineta Avenue (west) with further blocks added over time including Market/Folsom Streets to the east and north; Masonic Temple Square on Main Street between Polk and Mineta Avenues; and much of what is now Civic Center Park was laid out in this manner before annexation into City limits by Los Angeles in 1914

San Rafael is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 34,821 at the 2010 census. San Rafael has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years and is part of the Ancestral Pueblo culture. The area that would become San Rafael was first settled by Mariposa people in 1776. In 1849, during the Mexican–American War, it became part of Mexico following its defeat at the Battle of Palo Alto. After Mexican independence was granted on November 8, 1821, American settlers began to arrive in what is now Contra Costa County. Many were veterans of the Mexican–American War and wanted to start a new life after experiencing such violence and bloodshed. One such settler was John Sutter who purchased land east of downtown San Francisco on November 10th, 1846 from Pedro Figueroa for $1 million dollars (today's equivalent to $128 million). Sutter soon started building his initial mills which would create some of the most famous landmarks in town including Trinity Church and State Park. The early 20th century saw a significant increase in manufacturing as San Francisco developed into one of America's leading economic cities. However, World War II led to an abrupt decrease in industry due to wartime Production Tax laws passed by Congress. Despite this impact on Local businesses, many local entrepreneurs kept their heads down and built new businesses during the war years while they awaited repeal or modification of these harmful laws later on. These post-war boom years were also marked by social change as Bay Area residents increasingly moved into single-family homes while others worked their way up through available jobs within specific industries or fields throughout society. This transition brought about increased tensions between different cultural groups with attendant race riots taking place all across Northern California during this time period particularly around Berkeley and Oakland where African Americans had recently achieved full civil rights (albeit slowly). During this time period there also occurred numerous protests against UFW labor actions as well as growing anti-immigrant sentiment among Bay Area citizens generalizing all Mexicans as 'invaders'. In spite of these hostilities however, much progress had been made since World War II both socially and economically throughout Northern California – most notably within Black community which enjoyed increasing access to education and opportunities thanks to federal programs like affirmative action which were designed specifically for minority communities like African Americans at that time; along with other advancements like congestion pricing which helped reduce traffic jams downtown while creating new economic opportunities for nearby towns/villages (see below). These changes have culminated into what we currently know as Silicon Valley – a region characterized largely by technology companies or startups whose products make use various cutting edge technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning etc., making it one of today's richest regions on earth globally notwithstanding current political challenges faced therein (see discussion below).
