San Rafael, California is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,865 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Marin County and bordered by Menlo Park to the east and Tiburon Peninsula to the west. The City of San Rafael is bounded by Tiburon Bay on its north side; Point Reyes National Seashore to its east; and Mount Diablo on its south. The first Europeans who set foot in what is now San Rafael were Spanish missionaries who journeyed up Tiburon Peninsula in 1821 for missionary work among Native Americans. They built a small mission near present-day Point Reyes Station in 1825, but it was abandoned due to Indian resistance two years later. A small community began growth around this mission chapel withocks until 1871 when Congress passed an act annexing Marin County to create new counties within California - including Marin - and the Mission chapel became part of that countys newest town, Sausalito. By 1900 there were over 10,000 people living in San Rafael proper while only 2% of the county's population lived inside the city limits. In 1906 San Rafaels annexation as part of Marin made it one of six cities (the others being Redwood City, Palo Alto, Emeryville and Fremont) annexed into Los Angeles County as a result of Proposition 8 which repealed Californias ban against marriage between citizens from different states marry without her consent (thus making Los Angeles County).[1][2] The annexation made Alderman George Haines Mayor pro tempore then First Ward President pro Tem serving through 1978 before becoming Mayor from 1986-1992 under mayor Richard Riordan’s term as Measure B candidate opposed by incumbent Herb Wesson.[3] In 2002 voters re-elected Wesson with 64% cf 38% for Johnnie Leland less than 1/4th of a percent above required turnout[4]. On November 3rd 2004 San Rafael approval forMeasure C voting results showed 50% cf 44% for Measure C with 3 out 5 precincts reporting taking place outside of registered voter boundaries stifling any serious opposition such as early voting or party affiliation[5]. The first Europeans to visit what is now Marin County were the Franciscan missionaries, who named it after Saint Raphael of Padua because they thought he would intercede for them with God. On July 17, 1821, Commodore John Fenton explored and mapped the bay area which included present-day Marin County when he led a squadron of United States Marines under Commodore John Denny through the Golden Gate Bridge from Sausalito to Alcatraz Island. In 1825, José María Tarascón founded a missions at Point Reyes Station on Monterey Peninsula as part of his plan to convert all of California into Roman Catholic faith. The property comprising modern-day Marin County was organized as part of Rancho Rincon de las Haciendas de San Rafael y Guerra (later Mariana) in 1849 during Mexican rule over California. In 1852–1853 Antonio Vallejo surveyed and reported on land south of Point Reyes between Yerba Buena Cove and Muir Woods National Park; this became including most of today's Marin County. In 1860s construction began onization station built by Wigwam Township trustees Alfred Paine and Willis Richardson just east of downtown SF along Boundary Street between Third Street NW and First Street NE (). Named "Fremont" until 1870 when it became "San Rafael". Railroad tracks ran past today's corner store just west side street off I-580 near Point Reyes Station until 1958 when they were replaced by State Route 1A
The first European to visit San Rafael was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1540. The area now known as San Rafael was part of the Rancho del Monte de Santa Cruz, which belonged to Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. In 1602, Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded by Father Junípero Serra and it is said that the Franciscans were so impressed with the natural beauty of San Rafael that they decided to make it their home. The first mission buildings were built on what is now First Street. The mission's land came partly from Spain and partly from a donation from St. Francis of Assisi.missionSanFéricoDeAsís remained active until 1821 when it merged with Mission Dolores, becoming one of California's original missions. In 1847, during Mexican rule, the mission became part of Presidio of Monterey and then sold to American settlers in 1850
