What is San Rafael, California? San Rafael is a small city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 12,872 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of the city of Berkeley and on the western side of San Pablo Bay. The name "San Rafael" comes from Spanish meaning "sanctuary." The original mission in this area was Santa Rita de los Ranchos (Rancho San Ramon). In 1825, Mission Dolores became part of Santa Clara County and then San Francisco in 1853. The City of Berkeley was founded by American Jedediah Morse on December 3rd, 1836 as a result of land grants given to him by Governor Elihu Grant. As early as 1839, Fort Pointe Lighthouse and Ferry were built within what would become the City Limits of Berkeley. In 1870, Northern Pacific Railroad built its first line through Contra Costa County from Fairfield to Petaluma which connected with their main line at Antioch east of Fairfield. This opened up many new opportunities for farming and ranching in Contra Costa County as well as brought many people into town who had never before ventured outside their villages or towns in North Central California. In 1916 when World War I started, many soldiers came home and needed housing so UC Berkeley erected several tents near campus which became known as Camp Randall Park after then-Governor Ronald Reagan's inauguration ceremony that year. After World War II ended there were more job opportunities for Americans coming back to East Coast cities such as New York City where they were employed in manufacturing jobs that took place along Interstate 95 north of downtown Oakland but soon after these factories closed down local residents found other ways to make money such as renting out apartments or selling food products from street carts called surtitles

On July 26, 1847, the first post office was established in San Rafael. The town was named for San Francisco native and U.S. Senator Jose Feliciano, who had been elected to the Senate in 1846. The community of San Rafael grew rapidly due to its location on a shipping channel between Point Reyes National Seashore and Monterey Bay. In 1853, the state of California acquired all of what is now Marin County from Mexico, making San Rafael part of California.
