The Coast Guard Museum in San Ramon, California has a rich history of collecting and displaying coast guard gifts. The museum was founded in 1951 as the San Ramon Coast Guard Station Museum. In 1984, it became the Coast Guard Museum and Library. In 1990, it absorbed the San Francisco Maritime Museum into its collection and renamed it the Coast Guard Museum and Library of San Francisco Bay Area History (CGML-BAH). Since its founding, the CGML-BAH has donated more than 1,000 items to various museums across North America. These include items from the United States Coast Guard collection (including uniforms, tools, equipment), Canada’s coast guard collection (including postal stamps and cannons), Mediterranean Sea artifacts from ports along the Spanish/Italian border, Japanese military objects from World War II, Portuguese maritime artifacts from Brazil's Atlantic Ocean coasts, Chinese war goods from Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan during Sino-Japanese War], Antarctic artifacts from McMurdo Sound National Park*, Australian naval vessels*, Chilean army vehicles* used during Plaza de Mayo *and many more! Today there is a dedicated floor inside the CGML-BAH where visitors can find displays about every type of gift given by CGML-BAH members to various museums across North America over the years. The San Ramon Coast Guard Station was founded on September 4, 1887 by Captain George F. Train. The station was located at the intersection of Third Street and Mission Avenue in San Ramon. In 1915, the station moved to its current location at Seventh Avenue and Ninth Street in San Ramon. On December 17, 1954, the Coast Guard Station underwent a $2 million renovation that included new buildings and equipment. On May 6, 1961, Commodore James A. Hewitt became the first Coast Guard Commodore in Santa Clara County when he took office as Commandant of the Coast Guard Station at Seventh Ave & Ninth St in San Ramon. In 1982, a new pier was built at Seventh Ave & Ninth St in order to accommodate more services including boat ramps and an aviation wing which gave rise to the name "San Francisco Bay Naval Air Station" which is now known as Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

In 1849, three brothers founded the town of San Ramon on the east bank of the San Joaquin River in present-day California. The town grew rapidly and by 1874 had a population of 3,000. In 1881, San Ramon became an incorporated city. In 1906, it was renamed Ramon City after Roberto SánchezRamón, one of its founders. The city has since experienced significant growth and development throughout its history. The early history of the town is obscure but it is thought that it may have been founded by Héctor García de la Vega and his brothers in 1849 as a farming community built around their forge and tannery. By 1870, however, there were only 20 residents in San Ramon. It appears that the first store opened in this community on October 15th that year when Hilario Escobar bought flour from John Bemis for $2 per bushel (equivalent to $40 at current prices). San Ramon continued to grow rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to new transportation methods like railroads and ocean shipping which made goods accessible from all over California including eventually Nevada and other parts of Mexico. This growth also led to increased competition among businesses owners and residents for limited access to land available for agriculture ordevelopment. The result was rapid gentrification of some high-end neighborhoods such as those near downtown while lower-income areas remained largely rural or agricultural until well into the 20th century. In 1906, following annexation by Berkeley City (then part of Oakland), San Ramon became one of Berkeley’s four wards with a total population estimated at 3300 citizens in 1920 according to Boardman’s “Annotated History Of Berkeley Municipal Grantees” However despite this growth Greenough determined that "the social composition [of] most working people who lived within easy reach [of] schools" remained unchanged indicating that "Berkeley's claim upon [San Ramon's] services is not based primarily upon economic considerations." During World War II much activity took place within nearby Los Angeles County due both to wartime needs such as food production but also because many jobs were available closeby without having to leave home. As a result many families decided to move into East Bay cities such as Emeryville or Menlo Park during these years although they retained ownership interests in their homes/small businesses until after World War II ended when local governments assumed control over them again culminating in efforts today called “reclaiming abandoned properties” whereupon many families are able once againto maintain their homes/small businessessteady through market forces
