San Ramon is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 95,161 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Northern California and second-most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco. The first Europeans to visit what is now Contra Costa County were traders and missionaries from Asia who established trading posts along the coast of present-day Santa Clara Valley in 1775–76. In 1821, Mexican soldiers under General Antonio López de Santa Anna destroyed an American settlement at Mission Dolores on Point Reyes Station during the Alamo Factor campaign against Mexico; this event became known as the Battle of San Ramon. A year later, Californio Captain Manuel Carrillo founded a small settlement by the name of Rancho BRAVO near today's intersection of Highway 101 and University Avenue. By 1825, two ranches had been organized: Rancho SANTA FE (now part of Livermore) east of downtown and Rancho VENTURA (now part of Hercules) west of downtown. In 1827, both ranches were combined into one large ranch called "Rancho Rinconada". During its early years, San Ramon was primarily a agricultural community with few non-agricultural residents until it became an industrial center for manufacturing goods such as textiles and plastics during World War II when defense spending increased statewide due to strategic location on PG&E's electrical transmission lines.
