San Ramon is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was founded on October 15, 1847 by Captain George Hearst and his brother-in-law Jedediah Smith. The city was named after Rancho San Ramon, which had been acquired byCaptain George Hearst from the Sanchez family in 1836. The first post office was established at San Ramon on December 12, 1847. In 1897 it became part of the City of Oakland and then the City of San Francisco through annexation. As of the 2010 census, its population was 155,161. The discovery of oil in San Francisco Bay in 1901 led to increased development around San Ramon and other areas along the coast where crude oil could be drilled. This led to an rapid growth of industry within the city limits as well as outlying rural villages such as Tomales and Petaluma. By 1935 only a small portion of land remained undeveloped; most of what is now downtown San Francisco had been built up since then. The high demand for housing during World War II forced developers to build more dense concentrations near military bases and naval vesselsyards throughout coastal California; this led to a proliferation of subdivisions that still exists today with few blocks or neighborhoods remaining industrially active save for a scattering around downtowns and select waterfront districts

In 1974, however, Proposition 13 (a measure passed by Californians that slashed funding for public schools) caused a massive school district-wide revolt that led to the city's eventual bankruptcy. However, since then San Ramon has made significant progress and is now an attractive local center with strong cultural values and businesses that continue to thrive.
The first recorded mention of San Ramon in California is a letter from Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo to the Spanish authorities in 1769, which refers to the location as "San Ramon." The name probably originated with the people who lived around the creek that running through the now-defunct village called San Francisco de Osmeña. In 1847, José Joaquin Murrieta founded what is now known as Murrieta County and named it for his father, Don José Joaquín Murrieta.
