San Ramon is a city in Californias San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 97,653 as of the 2010 census. It is located at the intersection of I-580 and US 101. The city was founded in 1887 by Spanish colonists as part of Rancho Vallejo del Arroyo Seco. The name "San Ramon" comes from the Otomi people who inhabited this portion of California before Europeans arrived. The first permanent European settlers were Mission Indians who arrived in 1769 and 1770. They numbered about seventy souls, but soon found themselves competing with the local Mexican families for land and resources including water, timber, and grazinglands. In 1847, José Joaquín de Urquiza y Costilla granted Rancho Vallejo del Arroyo Seco to Lorenzo Sánchez de la Parra on behalf of Manuel Miranda y Real, Governor of Alta California under Mexico's rule following its independence from Spain. This ranch house still stands on Capitol Hill in downtown San Ramon today’s plaza. The grant included 7 square miles (15 km2) of valley floor that became San Ramon Valley; it included part of what is now western Contra Costa County and eastern Marin County as well as sections near Hayward and Livermore valleys within present-day Oakland County In 1852 he sold 2/3rds interest in the ranch to John Cranch for $5,000 cash which he used to purchase 350 acres (140 ha) south of town site now known as Northvale Boulevard on Valentine’s Day 1850 from Rufus King Preston for $10 an acre plus a house platted “at the old mission gates” northeast corner lot then Surveyed by Wm Muhlenberg & Sons thenceforward called Northvale Avenue through tracts purchased by Jno Bueling late 1800sand later owned by him & wife Beatrice Copley [sic] until 1949 when it passed into private hands The first post office opened at Southville on February 25th 1860 Ranchos Vallejo del Arroyo Seco remained unorganized until October 15th 1863 when José Herrera unified it with Rancho Rinconada del Norte into one ranchero with Juan Bautista Aguilar named director general . On January 6th 1865 George Hearst acquired title to 640 acres (270 ha) eastward along Santa Clara Creek via donation from Antonio Peña Nieto Following Hearsts acquisition title changed hands several times between his heirs before finally passing away intestate to his widow Mabel Loring Barnes Hearst December 3rd 1928 . On May 11th 1932 City Council voted 4-1 to change name form “Valley View” to “San Ramon” after Mayor James Ahern oversaw survey 1-mile wide loop around city center streets Chasen Baker Streets & Market Street between First National Bank Building & JF Penney store being surveyed parallel thereto then renamed Market Street east side thereof receiving full credit februrary 1933 thru october 1935 In 1951 San ramon Unified School District was established bringing together three predecessor school districts: East Contra Costa Union School District 1916-1917; West Contra Costa Union School District 1922-1924; Richmond Heights Local School District 1941-1945; South Valley Local School District 1951-. One hundred years ago today there were only 69 students enrolled in our high school Our current enrollment totals 248 students making us one of largest public schools serving communities throughout Northern California

The population peaked at 10,500 in 1890 but declined to 7,500 by 1920. It has since increased modestly but remains a small community with relatively low economic activity.
