The area that now makes up San Ramon was part of Rancho Santa Clara, which the Mexican government granted to José María Narváez in 1834. During World War II, San Ramon played an important role as an airfield for Operation Overlord; during this time it also served as a staging ground for troop movements into Europe. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home but some remained behind to man various military facilities throughout California such as Almaden Air Force Base outside Los Angeles or Beale Air Force Base northeast of Sacramento. Today, portions of these former bases still hold activities such as missile tests or training exercises. San Ramon is a city in California, United States. The population was 97,651 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Francisco County and the seat of San Ramon Township. The City of San Rafael sits adjacent to its eastern edge on Carquinez Strait, while Livermore Valley separates it from Contra Costa County to the south. At this time Rancho Rinconada was acquired by Mariano Castro and built as an agricultural mission with 14 adobe buildings near present-day downtown San Ramon. In 1906 the City of San Ramon annexed two adjacent townships – Menlo Park to its east and El Sobrante to its west – creating a new municipality which would grow rapidly over time due largely to immigration from Europe: as of 2010 it had a population of over 205,000 people living within 5 miles (8 km) of any other municipal center in Northern California! On November 10th 1910 voters passed Proposition 8 by referendum legalizing same-sex marriage throughout California; this led to rapid growth for both cities with their combined populations topping 200,000 residents just four years later! The town of San Ramon, California was founded in 1847 by brothers José and Manuel Ferrer. The area that now makes up San Ramon was part of the Rancho Cuchumatán Mexican land grant given to José Ferrer in 1835. In 1849, theFerrers moved to their present-day home, located on a small hill overlooking downtown San Ramon, after purchasing 5 acres (20 hectares) of land from Juan Bautista Alvarado. The early residents of San Ramon were Italian immigrants who worked in nearby towns such as Hercules and Pleasant Hill. In 1865, the Ferrers donated land for a Methodist church and school in what is now downtown San Ramon. The first building was constructed on North Main Street between Santa Fe Avenue and East 12th Street. A second church and school were built on West Webster Avenue between First Street and Second Street in 1872. In 1886, the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five council members. The city's first fire department was organized in 1903 when one man was hired to hose down streets during a heat wave. By 1916, the city had six departments: police; public works; water supply; Streets Department; market place; and library which served as a social center for the community. In response to World War II housing shortages caused by rationing,San Ramon became known as "the town that never Sleeps" because people would stay up all night working on war projects or making munitions plants possible without sleep or food supplies. Many people lost their lives duringWWII due to work related illnesses or accidents at these plants including Carlos Saenz who died after being told he could not continue working at Gulf Oil because he could not breathe under high pressure levels created by production processes
