National Guard gifts have been a part of the San Ramon community for over 60 years. Gifts from local departments and organizations have been used to celebrate special occasions or given as presents to friends and family. The National Guard gift history in San Ramon begins with the creation of the County National Guard on Dec. 5, 1944. The first national guard unit was organized in San Francisco on Jan. 15, 1945 under command of Colonel Edward Doherty. Gift giving has always been an important part of the National Guard culture and tradition. In 1946, Commander John Fenton dedicated a new armory at our military installation in Walnut Creek which served as the headquarters for all national guard units throughout California. This armory was also home to the state’s first civilian police department which functioned as a liaison between the military and local law enforcement agencies. In 1957, Governor Goodwin Liu activated 10,000 men from the California National Guard to support emergency services during statewide floods that swept across Northern California. During this time, many patriotic citizens donated items such as bicycles, radios and cookers to help support our emergency efforts. Today, there are more than 460 member units of the California National Guard consisting of both Regular Army and Air Force components! Our members serve their communities through deployments worldwide including Operation Noble Eagle – an effort to secure supplies essential for tornado recovery in Texas – Operation Joint Warrior – participation in anti-drug operations throughout Central America – Hurricane Harvey relief – responses to natural disasters such as wildfires or earthquakes–and more! The San Ramon community has poured its hearts into supporting our nation’s military by donations of goods and services since 1944 when our county first mobilized its forces for World War II service! We continue to appreciate your generosity by providing volunteer opportunities for individuals and families in every imaginable way! The San Ramon National Guard was first organized on November 15, 1907. The unit was originally called the San Francisco Bay Battalion and served as a militia detachment in response to the 1906 earthquake. In 1912, the battalion was renamed the California National Guard and it later served as an arm of the United States Army during World War I. After World War I, the battalion became part of the United States Navys Coast Guard until 1951. The battalion was mobilized for service in Vietnam from 1969-1973. The regiment disbanded on September 5, 1973.

The city of San Ramon, California was founded in 1848 by the brothers Jedediah and David Bancroft. The site for the city was chosen because of its location on a branch of the Mission Creek floodplain. The Bancrofts were gold miners who came to California from Nevada and located their claim in what is now east San Ramon. In 1849, they sold the claim to James Irvine, who named it Rancho San Ramon after his father-in-law, José de la Cueva y Balboa. In 1863, part of Rancho San Ramon was transferred to called Rancho Santa Clara County. In 1876, portions of Rancho Santa Clara County were divided into two new counties - Contra Costa and Marin - which led to the name change for that area as well. San Ramon began becoming an agricultural center during the early 20th century due to its fertile soil and proximity to reservoirs that provided water for farms and cities such as Oakland and Berkeley. During World War II, San Ramon helped create munitions production at nearby Pescadero Naval Weapons Station while also providing housing for soldiers in nearby Concord Naval Hospital. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or were moved out of town as technology advanced and job opportunities became more plentiful in other parts of California. However, some old businesses have reopened recently including a software company which relocated from Redwood City after being established there 50 years ago; a restaurant that had been located in downtown San Rafael since 1906; and a store opened in 1911 that still sells groceries from its original location on First Street near Highway 101
The town of San Ramon was founded in 1853 by wagon drivers and traders. The name comes from Spanish meaning "happy valley." In 1875, the town became an incorporated city.
