The first USS Missouri (1862-65), also a Confederate ship, arrived in San Francisco Bay on October 20th of that year. She was towed by the Constitution upanchor line to Mare Island Naval Shipyard for conversion into an all purpose tugboat. San Ramon is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population of San Ramon was estimated to be 116,865 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous city in Contra Costa County and one of its eight municipalities. The name "San Ramon" was given to the town by Spanish settlers in 1849 during their attempt to find an agricultural area near Stockton which could support a large population. The name first appeared on a map dated 1853 and it may have been derived from the Chahamitza or Rancho San Pablo area adjacent to present-day San Ramon. Different sources attribute different origins to the establishment of what is now called "Chávez Park." One story tells of American soldiers who were stationed there during World War II; they established a campground and named it after then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt's maternal uncle, José Chavez de la Torre. Another account says that horticulturist John Weaver founded a nursery here in 1912 and named his company Chavez Park Nursery after his wife's father, Francisco Chavez y Pacheco. In 1957, when Interstate 580 was built concurrent with State Route 26 (SR 26), much of west Contra Costa County became rural as well as developed areas such as Martinez and Pleasant Hill were bypassed for development east of I-580 along SR 86 (now US 101). This left behind many small villages which continued to function untilafter 1980 when all but two - Arroyo Seco Village and Livermore - were dissolved into incorporated cities under state jurisdiction due to their size or lack thereof relativeto other communities in Contra Costa County.(1) A few years later, however, when I-580 was extended south from its original terminus at I-880 past Martinez through san ramon into unincorporated portionsof contra carlos county (northwest corner of Martinez/Contra Costa county line),the village concept regained some vitality with plans circulating for incorporation of several small villages within easy commuting distance including Arroyo Seco Village,,Livermore(southwest corner SR 87 & SR 98),Pleasant Hill(northwest corner SR 86 & US101)&Rancho San Pablo(southeast corner US 101 & SR 84). However these Plans never came together becauseitis difficult enoughto incorporationof so many tiny villages without causing any real economic impact on larger community whileI-580 remained an interstate highway providing convenient accessfor Chicagoans & others interestedin moving away from smaller towns.(2) In January 1992 City Council voted 3–0 not to include Arroyo Seco Village or Livermore among their newly created cities because they felt that they had done more than enough unto themselves since 1980.(3) As per 2002 census data those living within city limits only make up 25% Of The Population With Outlying Rural Communities having populations over 20%. Industrial growth has led to increased automobile use& manufacturing jobs being replaced by services such as health care, education etc making contact with outlying rural communities increasingly difficult despite attempts by city officialsTo revive old relationships

The first Europeans to visit San Ramon were the Spanish in 1769. The town was founded by Juan Manuel de Alvarado, who named it San Ramon after his personal Rancho del Rinconcito. A mission was established here in 1815 and a German Mission in 1821. The town became part of California in 1850. In 1865, the first steam locomotive ever built arrived in San Ramon from Sacramento.
