Sanger is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about an hour and a half from Fresno. It is part of the Fresno-Madera County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community experienced a boom during World War II when various munitions plants were constructed there including Castle Hill Ammunition Plant and nearby Westinghouse Electric Company plant (now known as Imperial Chemical Industries). However, following World War II the community slipped into decline due to lack of economic opportunity and population growth elsewhere in central California. In 1984, entrepreneur Dick Hoagland purchased much of what had been left of Castle Hill Ammunition Plant and renamed it Sangers Industrial Park; it remains one of central California's largest industrial parks today. In 1990, residential development began near the park with many homes being built on land that had once been used for munitions production; this contributed to another resurgence in local businesses during the early 2000s which eventually led to a doubling of Sangers' population by 2006. In recent years, however, some redevelopment has taken place within walking distance of both retail stores and public schools while preserving much of its historical character; most notably Hacienda Heights which replacedmuch older single-family housing as high-density multifamily housing developments along with several new churches have arisen around downtown Sanger over time collectively forming "The New Downtown".
