The Sanger Army Depot was one of the largest and most important military installations in California during World War II. The depot was located on a small piece of land that is now part of the city of Sanger. It served as the home to more than 10,000 soldiers who were deployed to various campaigns in Europe and Asia. The first indication that the Military Base would be used for war came in 1942 when Major General Leslie R. Groves, Commander-in-Chief United States Army Pacific Fleet, announced that the new Japanese Naval Base at Pearl Harbor would no longer be our primary focus in Pacific Theater. Instead, we would build a large military installation in Sanger to support our European allies. In 1945, General Groves ordered all American troops out of Japan and into Korea because he believed that they were needed to keep South Korea from falling into Communist hands. This decision set off a chain reaction where many other American bases around the country began to be closed down because they were not able to house enough troops! The Military Bases Conversion Act of 1944 created what is known today as “Army Forces Command” which was responsible for allocating resources within each army division so that they could be used efficiently during wartime. As part of this organization, General Groves also established MAFE (Military Assistance for France) which was responsible for providing materiel and manpower support to French forces fighting against Nazi Germany and its allies. With so many different units operating out of these various Military Bases Conversion Acts facilities over time, it can often be difficult to track gift history or even know exactly when something happened! However, there are some examples worth noting: In 1946, Stryker Battery Company (later redesignated M1A2 Abrams) became an integral part of 4th Infantry Division stationed at Sanger;[1] In 1957, Headquarters & Service Squadron 9 (later redesignated 1st Airborne Brigade) became an integral part of 3rd Infantry Division stationed at Sangers;[2] In 1960-1961 both Combat Engineer Badges (CEB) become available through MAFE;[3] In 1966-1967 Camp Pendleton becomes an integral part of Marine Corps Reserve Force based out OFACS Mountain Barracks;[4] And finally in 1990’s establishment HML Fort Bragg becomes an important component within Marine Corps Reserve Force headquartered at Offutt AFB Neb.] These are just a few examples from across years – it is clear that Army Deployed gifts have always been big here at SANGER!

By 1907, the company had become the largest seed producer in the United States. In 1912, they produced their first fruit crop and became the leading grower of grapes in California. In 1917, they became the first company to plant vegetables on newly developed land near San Francisco. They continued to produce crops and sell products until their death in 1957.
