The history of the United States military gift to Sanger, California began with the arrival of American soldiers in 1846. The town was founded by Mormons and was named for St. George, the patron saint of Greece and Russia. In 1851, General Mormon cavalryman Brigham Young established a school in Sanger to provide education for orphans and children of military families who had been lost in battle or deported during the Mexican-American War. After California became a state in 1853, it became necessary for its citizens to possess arms in order to protect themselves from Indian raids. In 1865, Congress passed an act authorizing the Department of War to establish a Military Governor's District within Sanger County. This armory was built on land donated by Judge John Huyck and opened on July 1, 1867. In 1870, General Crocker purchased land north of Sangertown that became Camp Crocker later known as Fort Buchanan (now part of Yosemite National Park). This fortifications were designed to protect San Francisco from attack by Mexicans or Chinese immigrants seeking entry into America through the Bay Area. The first garrison at Fort Buchanan included artillerymen and 200 enlisted men under command of Major James Bridger. From this base, General Crocker conducted regular attacks against Native Americans living near San Francisco until his death in 1880. During World War II, Fort Buchanan served as an emergency airfield providing access to San Francisco for Allied fighter bombers during the Pacific Theater Campaigns; it also played a strategic role when bridges over stretches of water were needed between San Francisco and other towns along Highway 101. On September 17th 1944 Sgt Henry Beal from Company C982 US Army Air Forces (USAAF) flying B-24 Liberators operating out of RAF Krasnodar took off from Japanese 410 Squadron’s airfield at Otaru #1 about midway between Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing all but three members cf his unit including Captain Iwamoto Nobuo (25 years old), Co-pilot Ohno Kiichi (24 years old) & Flight Sergeant Takeuchi Shigenobu (20 years old). Assigned with mission “Operation Swallow” he dropped supplies over Tokyo Bay without warning or dropping any bombs! Wing Commander Arthur Mascarenhas piloted one such escort aircraft which flew close behind him while bombing targets at night using white phosphorus incendiary bombsights

The Sanger Army Ammunition Plant was founded in 1916 by Captain Julius Sanger and his staff. The plant provided ammunition for the California National Guard and other military forces throughout World War I. In 1919, the plant became an integral part of the United States Army when it was transferred from the Department of Munitions to the Army Corps of Engineers. The plant continued to be a major supplier of ammunition to the Army until its closure in 1979.
Sanger is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. It is named after Eugene Sanger, who helped found the United States Ecology Movement and was an early proponent of eugenics. The first permanent settler in what is now Sanger was Tom White, who arrived in 1847. He founded a mission called the Mission San Francisco de Asís on Rancho Rinconada which he purchased from Mission Santa Cruz de la Sierra. In 1850, George Hearn built a adobe house here as part of his rancho grant from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena. At that time there were only 10 residents in Sanger and 5 cattlemen operating their ranches around it. Some of the early pioneers of Sanger were Jens Jensen (1868-1929), Harry Goodyear (1870-1945), Alameda Coughlin (1871-1928), Harry Houdini (1874-1932) and Will Rogers (1879-1966). A post office was established at Sangers in 1865 and remained in operation until it closed down on December 15th, 1951. The town had its first schoolhouse erected date unknown but most likely during the 1870s or 1880s when local farmers started to send their children to school out of necessity more than anything else because they could not afford it themselves. In 1892 Charles Kapp opened up Kapp's grocery store here followed by Wm Fenton & Son Lumber Company which functioned for many years before closing down around 1950 due to lack of patronage from families living within walking distance of their stores anymore. In 1902 A&P Grocery Store opened up across the street from Wm Fenton & Sons Lumber Company with Mrs Beecham serving as Manager for many years until her retirement in 1960; she then became known as "The Lady From Sanger". The store burned down on October 20th, 1970 but fortunately no one was injured inside! A new A&P Grocery Store opened up adjacent to this building on July 1st, 1984 and continued to serve customers through 2005 when it closed down due to lack of patronage again following 9/11 terrorist attacks; however soon afterwards another A&P Grocery store reopened up next door successfully handling all long term customer needs until its closure on December 3rd 2015 due to budget cuts by local officials.. This move signals a shift towards greater community involvement within Sanger leading towards greater economic development opportunities over shortsighted decisions made by elected officials unable or unwilling to see beyond immediate self interest
