From 1906 until 1949 there were only three boats assigned exclusively to help remove wreckage from wrecked vessels; these boats were unable to reach those at sea due to lack of resources or weather conditions. After World War II saw an increase in wrecks being found on America's coasts (due largelyto postwar trade), it became necessary for the Coast Guard Auxiliary (CGAA) which included both commercial vessels and pleasure craft owned by individuals or groups operating out of port cities such as New York City or Los Angeles Harbor with knowledge of seaway channels through which large quantities of shipped materials could be quickly transported ashore without risk of damage or loss - this became known as "theRobertson Line".
