A coffee plantation in Sanger, California was founded in 1893 by two German immigrants, Wilhelm and Emilie Kapp. The first crop of coffee beans were roasted on the property in 1894. In 1898, a new roasting plant was built on the property and the company became known as Kapp's Coffee. In 1912, the company merged with three other companies to form Roasters Trust Company. The merger led to increased production and also allowed for more variety in coffee sales throughout California. In 1932, Kapp's Coffee merged with another California-based coffee company to become United States Coffee Corporation (USC). This move allowed USC to purchase all of the assets of several other coffee companies including National Coffee Company (NBC) and New Orleans Coffee Company (NORCO). USC continued to produce high quality beans until it merged with Jura Harware Group in 1992. Today, Sanger is home to one of America's most well-known coffee brands - Kapp's Coffee - as well as several dozen smaller businesses that provide products and services related to espresso tea, roasted whole bean coffees, baked goods, juice bars and more.
