Sanger is a small town in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley region of California. At the 2010 census, its population was 7,868. The acronym "Sanger" is derived from Charles Babbage's 1851 proposal for a computer system that could be programmed to perform any task without human assistance, which would have been an important development in early computing. Sanger's economy depends largely on agriculture and ranching. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sanger were Spanish missionaries in 1776. They named it San José de los Dolores because of the numerous dolores ( hills) near the original mission site and they called nearby Mission San Francisco el Alisal (the "Golden Gate") because of its richly colored adobe buildings. American explorer Jedediah Smith discovered an overland route from Monterey Bay to Sacramento in 1814 and named it Fort Yuma after his Mexican predecessor, Joaquín de la Cruz y Alvarado y Pavón, who had built Mexico City's Alcázar y Mora about two miles east of present-day Sangers'. A year later, on February 24, 1816 Ulysses S. Grant arrived at this fort during his explorations along the lower Missouri River valley and became acting governor of New Mexico following Mexican independence from Spain. In 1821 gold was discovered at Fortuna Pass by James Wolkowsky and John CWheeler in search for a wagon road across Nevada into California that would lead to Santa Fe through Mount Shasta Pass; however no wagon road was found or developed until 1860 when Don Juan Borrás built the Donner Overland Trail through Bears Ears National Monument north of Sangers In 1865 Jefrey Hale reported surface water levels at Clear Lake below Ford Dam sufficient to support manyousands of head of cattle but no one acted on this report until 1899 when Humboldt County received land upstream from Clear Lake for irrigation purposes; irrigation allowed farming around Clear Lake increased production by 50%. In 1901 Dolph Ziegler patented a process for strippingmining gold outcrops using a slag arm method; this led to major discovery and refinement of methods for mining gold over large areas starting with Witkin Reefs off northern Nevada in 1901-1902 Since then there has been steady growth (+25%) due principally to agricultural (+50%) as well as new trade (+100%), technology (+10%), industry (+20%), education (+10%), professional services (-5%) and tourism (-15%). One reason why recent population growth has been so rapid is that transportation infrastructure has not kept up with population growth - accordingly there are more people per square mile living than ever before but fewer people working outside their homes - although some workers do commute long distances).

A company named Standard Oil of California started production in 1865 and soon became one of the largest oil companies in America. The town developed as a commercial center for oil production, with businesses such as I.G. Farben AG, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and General Electric Company dotting the landscape. The town's population peaked in 1916 at 30,000 people but declined due to World War I and the Depression. It lost its importance during the postwar period as production shifted to other locations around the Central Valley. Today, Sanger is a small community with a few hundred residents primarily engaged in agricultural activities or local tourism.
