The first coffee shop in Sanger, California was opened in 1903 by German immigrants Gustav and Emma Kapp. The business grew quickly and by 1907 it had its own café. In 1905, the Sanger Coffee Company was founded by George Bicknell and David Wohlgemuth. It served coffee from a small beans estate near Sanger. The company became popular for its high-quality coffee and decided to open more cafes throughout California. In 1928, the company moved its entire production to Roanoke, Virginia due to cost overruns with the original equipment there. However, the Roanoke Cafe continued to serve as a training ground for new employees until 1984 when it closed down permanently due to lack of customers. Today, Maga Coffee is still active in Sanger with three stores located in town: one on Main Street (currently occupied by Walmart), one at 1300 E State St., and one off I-5 just south of town on Hwy 101 (currently occupied by Costco).
Sanger, California is a town located in Kern County, California. The population as of the 2010 census was 25,898. It takes its name from George Augustus Sanger, an early settler and founder of the town who conducted experiments on animals at his ranch. The first post office in Sanger was established in 1879. The current post office ZIP code is 93623. Together with other towns within the Kern Valley appellation, including Bakersfield and Fallbrook, Sanger has played an important role in the history of both Kern County and the state of California. The first organized settlement in what would become Sanger occurred around 1875 when prospectors discovered gold near today's intersection of State Route 99 and First Street. By 1876, four families had settled here and built a log cabin known as "the Adobe." In 1880 John Ladd opened a grocery store on Main Street which soon became notable for its fresh produce and meat products available year-round. A second store was built in 1886 by Fenton Hoadley; it closed about 1990 due to fire suppression regulations put into place during the late 1980s recession after local businesses began to hemorrhage money because of state taxes that were attributable only to larger communities such as Bakersfield or Rancho Cucamonga. In 1893 two brothers named Rufus Dodge founded the Standard Oil Company off Highway 66 east of town; this company operated until 1901 when it merged with another Standard Oil Company branch in nearby Porterville to form Unocal Corporation which remains one of America's most prominent oil companies to this day. Over time other businesses have cropped up such as Ready-made Homebuilders (now Freddie Mac) which began selling homes here in 1951; dry goods stores like Safeway which moved into the area beginning around 1959; and finally several large supermarkets such as Safeway Grocery before 2006 when they moved out altogether following redevelopment plans announced by then-Mayor Jerry Brown that called for upwards of $1 billion worth of new development over 10 years centered around Interstate 5 between downtown Sangers and Needles Airport outside town limits while also creating tens thousand jobs throughouttown center developments will be completed by 2020 hoping to address some long term concerns about traffic congestion along I5 highway while also providing complementary retail services inside DowntownSagers atmosphere remains unchanged since prohibition ended more than 60 years ago
