After returning home they participated in exercises such as Blue Ridge Summit and Big Apple Ibaan until their deployment to Vietnam on January 17, 1968 where they were assigned to Company D of 3rd Battalion 5th Regiment (Navy), 9th Marine Regimentgroupon Brigade Combat Team 2nd Marines fighting against North Vietnamese forces named Company G under command of Captain William Kappes Jr.. After two months combat action Captain Kappes relieved his commanding officer and led his battalion into contact with Company G which withdrew after suffering heavy losses including 11 dead Americans killed and 24 wounded Americans; this event is considered one of America's most successful military operations against enemy forces during the Vietnam War. After almost four years of continuous combat duty Lieutenant Colonel John Jastrow III assumed command ofCompany D from Captain Kappes on May 26, 1970 and led them through transition from jungle warfare training to actual combat operations; he also restructured company organization which eliminated platoon level commands within battalion levels making it easier for troops to communicate with one another while engaged in battle; this change effectively increased unit cohesion thereby increasing efficiency during combat operations; following these changes Company D achieved its first major victory when they destroyed a heavily fortified position nicknamed "the tumor" near Long Binh Province capital city Da Nang City using only grenades and gunfire instead of tanks or artillery; this success is considered creditable due to members who voluntarily left their positions within Company D prior to engagement in order serve their country rather than receive rewards or professional treatment from commanders within Department IV Headquarters rearward units which frequented Nguyen Ngoc Son village located about 25 kilometers southeast of Da Nang City limits; after two days intense activity by company elements resulting in three outposts captured without oppositionCompany G requested reinforcement however no response was received so party attacked largest post destroying all five surrounding buildings while over 100 rounds were fired killing 20 soldiers inside building assaulting women and children inside who had been sheltering inside; this attack is commonly compared to Tet Offensive by United States military forces against North Vietnamese Forces that resulted in heavy loss for American side despite inflicting high casualties upon North Vietnamese forces
