In 1892, German immigrant Jacob Sanger founded the first small batch coffee roasting company in Sanger, California. The company was originally called the Sangers Coffee Co. and roasted beans were sold directly to customers. In 1926, the name of the company was changed to Koffeehaus Jacob Sanger & Son and beans were sold through a representative network of stores. In 1970, the business was bought by The Benenson Company and Koffeehaus Jacob Sanger & Son became a subsidiary of Benenson Coffee Inc.
Sanger is a city in the Northern California county of Contra Costa. The population was 58,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west side of San Francisco Bay, across from and adjacent to Oakland. The site that would become Sanger was first settled by Native Americans in 1776. The Mission Dolores Adobe, built in 1821 and now part of UC Berkeley, was the first large structure erected within what would become Sanger. In 1846, John Fenton acquired Rancho Rinconada, east of what is now Sangers Creek Boulevard and north of present-day Folsom Street, which he named Sanger after his wife's family name (sangar "a piece of land"). In 1865–1868, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, workingmen from Auburn who had been freed by General Ulysses S. Grant developed many parcels along El Camino Real between Sacramento and San Francisco. This road became known as "the Cascades." One group of these men bought an adobe house on Castle Point Road near today's Applebees restaurant for $2 per week in 1868; they called it Castle Rock House. They constructed a small cottage there until 1870 when they sold it to Captain Wm Gwynn for $5 per week; he called it Gwynn's Landing House because he operated a landing stage near shorelines at that location for shipping goods up the bay from China and other points on the coast. From this location they took control of much waterfront property around town including portions now occupied by City Hall Square and City College Plaza.. Captain Wm Gwynn's Landing House served as both their home and office until 1880 when they sold it to Jno Rourke for $10 per week; Rourke renamed it Rourke's Landing Inn after himself (from Irish rechta "fair ground"). He continued to use it as his home until 1889 when he sold it to Mr Chauncey Postell for $15 per week; Postell renamed it Postells Cabin (= Postells Hill). A period characterized by high unemployment followed during America's Great Depression led to various changes at Rourke's Landing Inn starting with prohibition in 1933 which caused many businesses to close down but also helped create jobs upstream at new locations such as water storage tanks manufacturing turbines required for World War II airplane production etcetera etcetera etcetera......... inhabitants gradually migrated away during this time creating residences along Castro Street south of Market Street....... finally demolition began in late 1960s/early 1970s making way for new construction............ In 1886 Jno Rourke purchased 5 acres adjoining current day Castro Streets SW & NE corner El Camino Real just northwest Of old postalls cabin..... laid out streetscape with 4 stories brick buildings set back behind lawn...parking lots are scattered throughout......this community came into being..... forming one block bounded by Castro St., NE corner El Camino Real & SE corner Washoe Rd

Sanger was founded in 1879 by Charles Sanger and his wife, Anna. The city was named after the couple's daughter, Sanger City. The city's first store opened in 1881. In 1886, the town of Sanger was incorporated as a result of a referendum. In 1916, the city annexed the unincorporated community of Spring Valley and renamed it Sanger City again. In 1922, Anna died at the age of 83 years and Charles became sole proprietor of Sanger City Stores Inc. He remained president until his death in 1957. During his time as owner, he also served on various boards including the Board of Directors for Women's Centers Corporation (WCC) and Chrysler Corp.'s Central Committee for Children & Youth Services (CCCY). He is buried at Mission View Cemetery in San Francisco.

The community was named in honor of Reverend Julius Sanger who helped found the American Missionary Society in 1828. In 1870, the town had a population of 10 people.
